Important Message about the Future of Today's Harbor for Children

For the past 75 years, Today’s Harbor for Children has helped thousands of youth rise above the battle scars of abandonment, neglect, and abuse to fulfill their potential. We offer our sincere gratitude to the children and youth who have shown the courage and strength to surmount severe trauma; to the house parents who have provided guidance, love, and support; and to the Harbor staff who have kept the campus running and provided a nurturing, uplifting environment. Most important, we thank you – the thousands of donors and volunteers who have contributed so much over three-quarters of a century to ensure that the Harbor is able to continue its mission.

As we reflect on 75 years of service, our vision for the future emerges from this strong history. We must preserve our mission, yet transform the organization to meet the needs of youth today. The legal and regulatory landscape has shifted dramatically, and it has impaired our ability to deliver the same residential services we have historically provided. Change is here, and we are embracing it.

Over the next several months we will share our plans to place the Harbor’s resources in the hands of DePelchin Children’s Center. DePelchin is the oldest family services agency in Houston and is widely revered for its leadership in strengthening the lives of children by enhancing their mental health and physical well-being. DePelchin has developed preliminary plans for two distinct programs to be located on the Today’s Harbor campus, one focused on pregnant and parenting teens and the other on older youth who plan to become independent by the age of 18. The next step involves finalizing a definitive agreement between our organizations. These are two constituencies that sorely need our help and who will benefit from the spacious facilities of the Morgan’s Point campus. Please stay tuned for more information as this transition unfolds. It is our sincere hope that you will continue investing in the children and youth who call the Harbor home and who need your support the most. This weekend we celebrated the memory of long-time volunteer, board member, and staff member, Cooky Mays with "Cookies for Cooky" on her birthday, April 9. Cooky generously supported the Harbor both financially and as a volunteer and leader for close to 25 years. She sadly passed away of COVID in 2020. Thank you to La Porte's own Ginger Snap Baked Goods for the delicious and beautiful cookies.

Our Story

Today’s Harbor For Children was founded in 1947 by the members of Houston’s Downtown Optimist Club with the support of many prominent Houston business and civic leaders. Texas Governor Ross Sterling and his wife donated their 21,000 square-foot mansion in Morgan’s Point, Texas, to the Optimist Club to be used as the first home for “Boys Harbor.”

As approaches to caring for children changed, the organization’s Board of Directors chose to sell the mansion due in part to its large orphanage-style environment. The Board decided to relocate the campus to across the street on land which was partially purchased from and partially donated by the Sterlings. In 1962, four family-style homes were built, with additional buildings and support facilities added over the years. In the early 1980s, three new brick homes were built for girls, and organization’s name was changed to Boys & Girls Harbor, Inc.

In 2018, we changed our name to Today’s Harbor for Children. As an organization that has continuously provided a crucial safe harbor for children in crisis, we are able to communicate clearly what we stand for with our new name.
