Someone I love has gone away
and life is not the same,
the greatest gift that you can give
is just to speak their name...

What is a Gold Star Family? The Gold Star family is one that has experienced a loss of a loved one–an immediate family member who died as the result of military service. Those who have died on duty leave behind parents, siblings, spouses, and children. Evolution Of The Gold S

tar:
A tradition dating back to the First World War, military service flags were flown by military families. These flags included blue stars for every family member who served in uniform. Families who had loved ones who died in the line of duty would have the blue star replaced with a gold one. The gold star was and is a signifier that the family has made the ultimate sacrifice. And families often had more than one gold star in their flags. As time went by, the use of the gold star in this way extended to lapel pins and buttons; they are awarded to family members by the military services. In 1947 Congress approved an “official Gold Star Lapel Button,” which formally recognizes service members who lost their lives in combat. A Gold Star lapel button (awarded to next-of-kin) was created in 1973. This version symbolizes active duty service members “who lost their lives in non-combat operations”. Gold Star honors are typically presented to the next-of-kin during the service member’s funeral.

Wishing all a Meaningful Memorial Day weekend 🇺🇸

05/20/2026

🇺🇸 Memorial Day is not “Happy.” It is sacred.

It is the day we pause to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.

It is the folded flag. The quiet cemetery. The name etched in stone.
The empty chair at the family table. The final salute that still echoes through generations.

Memorial Day is not about celebration — it is about remembrance.

At Taps for Veterans, we believe every fallen hero deserves to be honored with dignity, respect, and a live sounding of Taps. Those 24 notes are more than music. They are a nation’s promise that sacrifice will not be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, may we pause before we picnic. May we remember before we celebrate. May we honor before we enjoy the freedoms they secured. Because freedom is never free.

This Saturday would be our Matthew’s 25th birthday 🎈 Today we held our annual golf tournament and the weather couldn’t have been any better ☀️

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was our “Speak Their Name” Honor Field, where the names of fallen heroes stood across the course in tribute. Each one served as a powerful reminder that their sacrifice is never forgotten and their legacy continues to be honored.

Congratulations to the winners!!

May is Gold Star Awareness Month 💛

Throughout the month of May, we pause to honor and remember the families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Gold Star Families carry a loss that words can never fully heal, yet they continue to show incredible strength, courage, and love. 🇺🇸

At Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., we stand beside our Gold Star Families and hold close the memories of the heroes who gave everything for our freedoms. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and neither will the families who continue to carry their legacy forward every day.

This month, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect, remember, and honor the service members who gave their lives in defense of our country.

💛 Always Remembered… Never Forgotten 💛

To all Gold Star Families, we see you, we honor you, and we thank you. 🇺🇸

What an incredible honor we had this past weekend to present another scholarship through the PFC Matthew K. Guyon Foundation.

This recipient, Jeremy “JJ” Saunders, is an Eagle Scout whose dedication, leadership, and character truly embody the spirit of this award.

We were especially proud to present this scholarship in honor of fellow Eagle Scout and fallen U.S. Army hero, SPC Jarrett Kotalik. Carrying forward his legacy through young men like JJ is exactly why we do what we do.

Please join us in congratulating JJ as he takes this next step forward—we know he will continue to make a difference. 🇺🇸
