Before movies could talk, music told the story. 🎬🎻

During the silent-film era, movies were rarely truly silent. Orchestras, pianists, and organists performed live in theaters, using music to create the suspense, romance, comedy, mystery, and drama unfolding on screen.

Much of that music was nearly lost when talking pictures arrived.

Composer and film music historian Scott Lasky, founder and music director of the Famous Players Orchestra, has spent nearly 25 years researching and reviving this remarkable musical tradition.

And this October, audiences will have a chance to hear it come alive.

For The La Mirada Symphony’s presentation of the 1925 classic The Phantom of the Opera, Lasky has compiled and adapted a score drawn primarily from the original theater repertoire of the silent era, supplemented by some of his own compositions.

Listen to Mozart and everything seems effortless. The melodies are clear. The music flows naturally. Nothing sounds forced.

But for the musicians performing it? That apparent simplicity can be incredibly demanding.

There’s something special about the moment before an orchestra begins—the stage is set, the musicians are ready, and an entire room is waiting for that first note.

This season, **The La Mirada Symphony** is taking you from the mystery of a 1925 silent-film classic to intimate chamber music, the color and rhythm of Spain, and one of the most powerful works ever written for orchestra and chorus.
