Years ago, a little girl in La Miradaâs Foster Park neighborhood opened her front door a few days before Thanksgiving. đŚ
Her family had just lost her father. Money was tight, and she didnât think there would be a holiday dinner that year. But standing on the porch were neighbors sheâd never met, holding a big box of food and two turkeys.
She thought they were angels.
That Christmas, she was chosen for a program that let her pick out brand-new, warm clothes and shoes for the very first time.
That little girl was Yvette Walker, and today she is the President of the Rotary Club of La Mirada. đ
Kindness doesnât end when the moment is over. It grows, and it comes back home.
This year, we want to say THANK YOU to the people who keep that circle going:
đ La Mirada High School Interact Club. You gave up part of your July 3rd to run our hot dog booth at the Independence Day Celebration at Regional Park, and you did it with smiles the whole way. We were proud to present a $1,000 check to Interact President Priya Sahota and her amazing team. You are the future of service in this city, and that future looks bright.
đ Our La Mirada Rotarians. From record âsafe and saneâ fireworks sales outside Stater Bros. to scholarships, food drives and the Eileen Wade Clothes for Kids shopping day, you show up again and again. Every dollar raised stays right here in La Mirada.
đ Our community leaders and partners, including the C.A. Van Dam Family Foundation, Good Sam Pantry at Beatitudes of Our Lord Church, VFW Post 9148, Foster Road Elementary, and past President John Chapman, who keeps our fight against polio front and center. And thank you to the 55+ neighbors who joined us at our open house.
Since 1957, Rotary has been here for La Mirada, and weâre just getting started. This December, more than 50 local kids will shop for warm jackets and shoes, just like a certain little girl once did. â¤ď¸
Somewhere in La Mirada right now, thereâs a child who needs an angel. Will you be one?
đ Join us on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of every month at 6 p.m., North Woods Inn, 14305 Firestone Blvd., La Mirada. Everyone is welcome.
