Whale View Point

Whale View Point Whale View Point Shoreline Enhancement Project is a 501c3 organization collaborating resources to enhance and maintain the La Jolla,, Ca. Shoreline.

Whale View Point is comprised of about 1/3 of a mile of unimproved, neglected coastline in the middle of the community of La Jolla. This stretch is just south of the famous La Jolla Cove and the Children’s’ Pool, heavily used by surfers, joggers, walkers, pets and other locals & visitors from all over the world. It is the site of several 100-year-old historic cobblestone walls and a small grassy p

ark enjoyed by picnickers. Unfortunately, much of WVP has been trampled bare by so much human activity and, given a low level of City attention, its vegetation is depleted, invasive or not drought-resistant, its structures crumbling, its pathways rutted and overused. Ann undertook this Project having fallen in love with this coastline and its proximity to a walkable community almost 30 years ago and because she identified it as one which would be a good use for her problem-solving, consensus-building skills and for her considerable energy. It also inspired her for the way in which it is enjoyed by such a large number of people who could enjoy it even more with proper maintenance and attention. Through the WVP Project, City attention has been directed to installing a much-needed sidewalk which would accommodate baby buggies and wheel chairs which are currently unsuited for the gravel surface there. Ann Dynes is working with the community to implement the vision for the Project and with the City to issue permits to revegetate, repaint and spruce up this area. Looking ahead, it is desired that WVP will become a part of the California Coastal Trail and receive financial support and designation through the California Coastal Conservancy. Next steps for the Project include securing funding for planning professionals to address the urban drool along the coastline, to develop revegetation concepts consistent with drought conditions and mandates, to repair decayed picnic tables and benches. The vision is in place but funding is needed to advance to the planning of further beautification and repair of aging outdated infrastructures.
