Happy New Year! ASCP UCSD has many alumni members who has graduated from this chapter and gone to made an positive impact on our community.
We like to introduce you to Anh Nguyen who recently graduated from Skaggs this past year. She served as ASCP VP of Self-Care Outreach for 2016-17, President-Elect for 2017-18, and President for 2018-2019. We caught up with her to see how she is doing these days!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Where are you currently now and doing at the moment?
Anh: I’m currently a PGY1 Pharmacy Resident at Rady Children’s Hospital, here in San Diego. As a resident, I am able to learn about unique and rare disease states and treatments given that the hospital provide care for the pediatric population in San Diego, Southern Riverside, and Imperial counties.
During the residency, I rotate through various units such as General Pediatric Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, NICU, PICU, Transplant, Infectious Disease etc. and I also see patients weekly as part of an interdisciplinary team in either our Cystic Fibrosis or Severe Asthma Clinics. We also have our research and P&T projects throughout the year, opportunities to precept students from UCSD and UOP, and staffing responsibilities on weekends. So residency definitely keeps me busy, but I am fortunate to have the support and encouragement from my fellow residents and pharmacy staff.
Q: What do you miss about ASCP? How did being a part of this organization help you get to where you are on this journey?
Anh: I miss all the social activities that we did with our members, like making Valentine’s Day cards for our seniors at the Vi, and the events that we hosted for our geriatric community, especially Senior Formal and Senior Prom. They were not only enjoyable, but also rewarding because you get to see the smiles and joy on the faces of our geriatric friends.
From my involvement with ASCP, I felt that I gained many skills necessary to be a successful student and resident, such as communication skills (including emailing), how to work well in a team, how to time-manage, and how to be adaptable and think on my feet. I also made so many fun memories working with my team so I am grateful for the opportunities that I had with ASCP.
Q: What do you like to do for fun during your free time?
Anh: I don’t have a ton of free time nowadays, but when I do have some time, I am most likely watching Netflix or sleeping! My body isn’t used to free time so it just wants to sleep.
Q: What would you like to say to the residents at Vi at La Jolla Village?
Anh: That I miss visiting them and hope they are enjoying indoor activities at the Vi and are safe and healthy!
