The Penrose Institute

The Penrose Institute A research institute aimed at understanding the human mind, creativity and the unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity.

Roger Penrose believes the unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity will require a modification to quantum theory that explains human consciousness. In his view, consciousness separates human intelligence from machine intelligence giving us the ability to understand the world and be creative. Scientists initially argued that exotic quantum phenomena were confined to laboratories nea

r absolute zero – they could play no role in biological systems. But, recent breakthroughs show quantum phenomena are important in biology. Photosynthesis gets its efficiency from coherent transport of energy, and there is growing evidence that some birds have a quantum compass located in their eyes. Further breakthroughs are allowing us to build devices that probe the interaction between general relativity and quantum mechanics. These new developments will throw light on the fundamental laws of physics and generate insight in the fields of AI, the human brain, disease and ageing. They will also lead to the development of new types of incredibly sensitive sensor technology to probe our brain, our planet and our universe.

A brain structure that helps us walk in a straight line also appears to play a central role in emotional control and decision-making. The findings about the cerebellum challenge years of dogma.
