The UCSD ARI (AIDS Research Institute) is the bedrock of clinical and community innovation in HIV/AIDS Research, prevention programs and community education/support/testing that has had and continues to have local and global impact. UCSD was named as the second highest impact academic institution in HIV/AIDS in the world, second only to Harvard. (Science 321:521,2008)
The Director of the UCSD AI
DS Research Institute as well as the UCSD Center for AIDS Research, Dr. Douglas Richman, was named as the most frequently cited HIV author in the world! (Science 321:521,2008)
His research lab was the first to identify HIV drug resistance, and has been making breakthroughs since the first identified cases emerged almost 30 years ago. Our researchers are involved in research and training programs in 14 countries, most of which are resource-limited. We are proud to announce that our UCSD faculty member Dr. Davey Smith was named as the 2010 HIV Researcher of the Year by the HIV Medical Association. Among our Facilities we have the VA Hospital in La Jolla, CA and the UCSD Medical Center System including the Owens Clinic, AVRC and HNRC
The VA Special Infectious Disease Clinic and the UCSD Owen Clinic provide the majority of HIV/AIDS care in the San Diego area. The UCSD Owen Clinic opened its doors in 1982, and the VA Special Infectious Disease Clinic was established in 1983. UCSD ARI researchers continue to explore ways to eradicate HIV from the body, and ARI investigators are conducting the most far-reaching cross-border HIV research of any institution in the United States or Mexico, that has led to important changes in regional and national HIV policy, in both the US and in Mexico
UC San Diego was a founding member of the NIH AIDS Clinical Trials Group, which has been one of the major contributors to the development of new drugs and therapeutic strategies for HIV/AIDS. HOWEVER... WE NEED YOUR HELP! The UCSD AIDS Research Institute does NOT receive any State or Federal Funds. All funds are derived from public and private donations. The UCSD AIDS Research Institute is NOT a beneficiary of AIDS Walk and other related Fundraisers. The UCSD ARI does not use donations to support administrative costs. Your help makes a true difference to our researchers, patients, and the community. WHY IS THIS SUCH AN ONGOING ISSUE? More than 33 million people are currently infected with HIV, worldwide
Every day, 6800 people worldwide become newly infected with HIV (5 new infections per minute) and 5700 people die from HIV/AIDS (4 deaths per minute). There are more than 1.3 million HIV positive people in the United States, including more than 17,000 in San Diego County. The CDC estimates that in 2006, 56,300 new HIV infections occurred in the United States. In the US, the Centers for Disease Control estimate that 21% of those infected by HIV are unaware of their status, making them more likely to transmit the virus to others. The UCSD AntiViral Research Center Testing Van is making a difference locally by offering free testing in under-served areas of San Diego County. The number of new HIV infections continues to outstrip the numbers on treatment—for every two people starting treatment, a further five become infected with the virus. Despite considerable progress, global access to HIV treatment remains low: in 2008, only 42% of those in need of treatment had access to HIV medications. UCSD doctors are actively involved in improving access to treatment in the 14 countries in which we are working. HIV/AIDS is now the leading cause of death among all African- Americans ages 25–44.
