ABC4 will be traveling to Ochi Rios, Jamaica this March to partner with the locally based nonprofit called the International Children’s Outreach to work in an orphanage, focusing on youth empowerment and education. We will be doing academic and life skill tutoring for the children who through life circumstances have come to reside in the orphanage. We also hope to bring them educational and recrea
tional supplies to stimulate and nourish their creative minds, as well as basic hygiene necessities. Additionally, our social justice issue focuses on the underlying significance that education has upon disadvantaged communities in continuing the cycle of poverty. Our mission is to help them view education as a way to change the course of their lives and provide them with the hope that through education, a more promising future is absolutely attainable. Furthermore we will
support the efforts of the nonprofit by maintaining, repairing, and beautifying the orphanage facilities so it may become a welcoming and safe environment for the children who call the orphanage home. ABC4 is one of eighteen trips run by Alternative Breaks@UCSD, which is part of a nationwide movement of student-run organizations dedicated to coordinating international, national, and local service learning trips for college students during spring and summer breaks. These trips combine education of social injustices with strong direct service to have a lasting impact on the students and communities we work with. Each trip
partners with a local nonprofit and works alongside the people of the communities, collaborating to enact real, powerful, and sustainable change.
