NSAI San Diego

NSAI San Diego The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) is the world’s largest not-for-profit s For more information about the Bluebird, click HERE.

HISTORY OF NSAI: In 1967 there were approximately 80 songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee. Eddie Miller, who wrote the classic song “Please Release Me, Let Me Go,” was determined that they needed a “voice”. Over lunch, he, Buddy Mize and Bill Brock envisioned the Nashville Songwriters Association. The first organizational meeting was held at the Old Professional's Club on Music Row. Forty-one songw

riters were founding members of the organization including Kris Kristofferson, Marijohn Wilkin, Jerry Chestnut, Danny Dill, Liz and Casey Anderson, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, and Ted Harris. THE BLUEBIRD CAFE: NSAI in Nashville owns and operates the world-famous Bluebird Cafe, featured on the ABC TV show "Nashville." Many songwriters like Kathy Mattea, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, and Taylor Swift got their start at the Bluebird or through NSAI. NSAI WEBSITE

NSAI San Diego started the year by emphasizing the important role that royalties play for songwriters. When our music is out in the world earning money, it's the responsibility of performing rights organizations to collect and pay that money to songwriters and publishers. We were fortunate to have Barbie Quinn from BMI, one of the larger PROs in the U.S., join us at our meeting last week at Studio West. Keep an eye on our schedule to see when representatives from ASCAP and SESAC will be joining us later in the year. https://www.nashvillesongwriters.com/chapter/san-diego-ca

At our meeting on Sunday, we talked about the importance of making an impact with the last line of the chorus and how the overall flow and pacing of songs can make or break them. Our members' songs just keep getting better!

We were back in person at Studio West for our meeting yesterday. We discussed why and how to rhyme and better ways for songs to get their messages across. You know, songwriting basics.

At last night's meeting on Zoom, we heard songs with structures we hadn't heard before, which reminded us about how the order of the sections affects the song's pacing and momentum. There's a lot to think about when we're writing songs!

We had a lot of first-timers today at our online meeting. We heard some great songs and a few awesome instrumentals. (We're one of the weird NSAI chapters that offers feedback on instrumentals for film and TV.) We'll be in person next month on July 20th. If you're in San Diego, come on by!

The unintentional theme of this month's meeting had to do with prosody, which is how the music captures the mood and vibe of the lyrics. We heard some songs that reflected the perfect marriage of music and lyrics, while others could have been greatly improved with a few tweaks. That's often the difference between an okay song and a great one: a few tweaks.

On Sunday, we had the St. Patrick's Day edition of our NSAI San Diego meeting on Zoom. (Okay, actually, some of us just wore green. But it was festive.) Our unintentional theme this month was remembering not to rhyme the same sound in different sections of a song. Change up those rhyming sounds for more interest!

Another full screen for our online meeting yesterday. Each month, we notice an unintentional theme. Yesterday's was the importance of not repeating significant words in lyrics because they lose their impact after the first time and create a missed opportunity to add a new idea to a song. We can't wait to see what next month's accidental theme will be. Join us to find out!
