For Black & brown parents, parenting can be overwhelming & the challenges are often compounded by racial stress & inequities.

In this Essence feature, I talk about how recognizing burnout is essential to healing and improving family well-being, diving into the concept of racial battle fatigue & why culturally expansive interventions are critical for addressing both structural issues and stressors specific to our communities. It’s a conversation we need to have more often.

The Surgeon General's recent advisory shined a much-needed light on the overwhelm that parents are facing. Here's what we can do about it.

NEW: Black Californians have health insurance, get preventive screenings, and monitor their health. Yet 1 in 3 reports poor treatment by a health care provider because of their race/ethnicity.

“I feel like Black voices aren’t as loud. They are not taken as seriously. I told [my doctor] I was short of breath, and he told me, ‘You are out of shape…You just need to lose weight and exercise more.’ And it ended up being that I was severely anemic and had to have two blood transfusions.” —Black woman, participant in focus group, private insurance

Experiences like this happen all too often, and it’s time to hold the health system accountable for improving outcomes for Black Californians. Read California Health Care Foundation’s latest report here:

California, home to the most culturally diverse population in the country and the fifth-largest Black population of any state, has a major opportunity to be a leader in health equity. But, again and again, research has shown that racism and structural barriers in the health care system prevent Black...

"Boundaries at the distance at which I can love you and me simultaneously." Prentis Hemphill⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Boundaries has become a buzz word in the healing profession. But what does that actually entail, setting boundaries? Well, this quote sums it up perfectly: its about being able to support myself while also being there for others.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As healing professionals, we've been trained to give until we are tapped out. But setting healthy boundaries doesn't just free you up to be the best professional you can be, it's also a great modeling tool for our parents and families. When we set healthy boundaries with our clients, we are indirectly giving them permission to do the same!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do you set boundaries in your life?

“An all too common way that we continue to marginalize diverse parents and families is by making them believe that they are incomplete or broken because they don’t fit in a Westernized image of a healthy family.”
As we look to support all the types of families, and all the identities that a family can include, we are still far away from true, unconditional support. We need to show more representation in our professional field and in the ways that we showcase diverse families and voices.
While our nonprofit is unconventional in mission and vision - we are focusing on the professionals who we’ve families rather than the families themselves. We aim to train, support, grow, and educate professionals who serve families to acknowledge how different families have different needs and unique issues.

When are we going to talk about how the lack of cultural awareness in treating parenting and families is a detriment to their healing?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An unusual mission for a nonprofit: serve the professionals who serve the clients! We talk a lot about changing children's and families' lives, but we rarely talk about how to prepare professionals on how to create that change. And the lack of diversity in our professionals is staggering. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Current research shares this: "The differences in cultures have a range of implications for mental health practice, ranging from the ways that people view health and illness, to treatment seeking patterns, the nature of the therapeutic relationship and issues of racism and discrimination." (Gopalkrishnan, 2018)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If we know that having more representation in mental health can influence outcomes, why aren't we discussing it more? That's what we're aiming to do with our initiative. If you're interested in learning more or support that initiative, join our mailing list, so you don't miss out on any details (http://bit.ly/DIPMailingList or check out the )!

"Psychology says, as adults, we try to develop character traits that would have rescued our parents." Unknown⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever stopped to think about what brought you into the helping profession? Was it your own story? Your own healing? Your own journey? We bring so much of ourselves into our work that we must take time to reflect on our WHY!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Story time: I stopped talking to the woman who raised me in 2011. She is my step-grandmother, and she was emotionally and physically abusive to me. But although I do not talk to her, I cannot ignore the influence that our relationship had on my seeking out a profession where I get to support parents daily. I know that a lot of the work I do centers around the question: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What type of parent who my grandmother have been had she had the support she needed?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is why Diversity in Parenting was created: to bring more representation to a profession that seems to only talk about one type of family, thereby leaving so many families without support, without access to healing, and without a clue as to how to be wholly healthy together.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you considered how your story influences the healing work you do?
