We honor and celebrate Memorial Day as many others, but with added meaning. That’s because on Memorial Day 10 years ago, Wyatt, then six years old, went into emergency surgery to remove a large brain tumor that was discovered overnight while on a holiday weekend trip with our family.
Two brain surgeries and many radiation treatments later, we were cautiously hopeful that his treatment would be successful but also realistic about the possibility of it coming back. A terrible fact that was now part of our lives was that the average survival rate for children with malignant brain tumors was 66%, and as he entered the first grade, we faced the fact that brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in children.
This Memorial Day, we remember Wyatt’s journey and 10 years of survivorship. We are fortunate that the tumor was treatable, but way too many other children and their families face a different reality.
Along with family, friends, community, and other families who have gone through similar experiences, we created the Winning With Wyatt foundation. The foundation is a way to fund research and give hope to children and families who face brain cancer without advanced treatments to help them survive or live the quality of life they deserve.
We invite you to share Winning With Wyatt with people in your life and consider making a donation or learn more about the foundation at www.winningwithwyatt.org. Please also save the date for November 14 and join us at the Winning With Wyatt Night of Hope as we celebrate Wyatt’s 10 year journey.
