Community Helping Teachers

Community Helping Teachers This page is designed to help teachers in La Grande and Island City area with everything they need during this unprecedented time.

Many teachers are having a tough time mentally, financially, and emotionally. As a teacher husband, I know we all can help! This page is solely intended to help teachers in the La Grande and Island City area. There may be room to grow throughout the surrounding Union county area. The goal is to help educate members on what teachers need. Often time it is hard to ask for help and I am a strong advocate for the support and well-being of our educators and the success of our students.

Community Helping Teachers is back! With the holidays here, full-time photography, and sports in full swing, we finally have a minute to recognize the teacher spotlight Friday!! Without further ado, we would like to recognize third-grade teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Olson from Central Elementary! Take it away!

Wife. Mom. Teacher. My name is Elizabeth Olson and I teach 3rd grade at Central Elementary. This is my third year teaching at Central and in the LG School District. My family and I moved to NE Oregon from Central Oregon 5 years ago. My husband and I have three beautiful, animal-loving children; Addyson (4th grade), Mackinley (2nd grade) and Trigg (Kinder). My passion is in education and I am grateful that I get to share that passion each day with children in my classroom! I have been teaching for six years. I graduated from Western Oregon University with a Bachelors's degree and continued my education at OSU Cascades where I received my Masters's degree in Education. I was recently accepted to WGU's Masters of Science in Educational Leadership program. I will begin a 2-year program Jan 2022!

In my first year teaching, I taught 5th grade at my childhood elementary school. I became a mom of three at the end of that school year and chose to be a stay-at-home mom. My husband and I then moved our family to Baker City where I taught 2nd grade for two years. I began teaching in the La Grande School District 3 years ago as LSDG provided opportunities for my professional growth and has been a good fit not only for me as a teacher but for my children as students.

Teacher Spotlight Fridays are back to recognize those amazing teachers out in our community! Today's Teacher Spotlight is on Mrs. Mendoza. Special ED teacher at Central Elementary! Thank you for your continued service! Take it away!

My name is Kristi Mendoza and I am a special education teacher in the resource room at Central Elementary. This is my 4th year teaching in the beautiful town of La Grande. My husband and I have 4 children: Ellie (24), Sophie (22), Cristian (19) and Ava (11).

I have been teaching special education for the past 20 years. I graduated with a degree in elementary education from Eastern Oregon University, but soon found a passion for working with students with special needs as an early childhood special education teacher where I worked in Ontario, Oregon for 7 years. In 2005 My husband and I moved our family to the Tri-Cities to be closer to his side of the family. I began working in the resource room as a special education teacher for Pasco School District where I worked for 13 years before moving to La Grande. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching my kids participate in sports, reading and walking our dog Finn.

I feel so incredibly fortunate to have a career where I’m doing something I love, and to work in a community where I have the opportunity to work alongside amazing teachers and support staff!

Teacher Spotlight Fridays are back to recognize those amazing teachers out in our community! Today's Teacher Spotlight is on Mrs. Azure. Special ED teacher at Island City Elementary! Thank you for your continued service! Take it away! Also, next week stay tuned as we honor Mrs. Mendoza who is also a Special Education teacher at Central Elementary!

Hello. My name is Jennifer Azure. I am a Special Education teacher at Island City Elementary. Before moving to La Grande, I taught second grade in Montana where I was born and raised. Over the years of my teaching career, I have found that helping students build confidence in themselves so they can be successful in their academic endeavors, continues to bring me so much happiness. Teaching in special education has allowed me to gain perspective and open-mindedness regarding the importance and impact that education has on our current and future generations. As a lifelong learner, the students I work with continue to show me what qualities it takes to be resilient and inspirational.
