March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a campaign established in 1987 to promote inclusion and raise awareness of the challenges individuals with developmental disabilities face. Advocacy organizations play a critical role in advancing these efforts. For example, ARC La Crosse Inc. and Citizen Advocacy are dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental and related disabilities, as well as their families and communities, by protecting civil rights, pairing individuals with a life match, and promoting overall well-being.
This March, increasing uncertainty surrounds long-term care services and funding, as several programs have been reduced or discontinued. Proposed changes to Social Security, including more stringent verification requirements for phone-based applications, may further limit access for individuals with disabilities. These barriers underscore the growing need for advocates who can assist with applications, service coordination, legal matters, and program navigation—particularly for individuals with limited access to technology.
Organizations such as ARC La Crosse Inc. provide essential support to children with special needs and their families, including assistance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Effective advocacy requires specialized knowledge and skills to ensure these children receive appropriate educational and community supports.
It is important to note that ARC La Crosse and Citizen Advocacy are separate organizations, each with distinct missions and approaches to advocacy.
