A record 45% of Americans now identify as political independents. Yet the political system continues to reward partisan loyalty over broad representation.

What happens when mid-cycle redistricting and hyper-partisan primary politics collide? The result may be a “double whammy” that leaves voters feeling increasingly disconnected from the democratic process.

Do your elected officials represent everyone they serve?

The framers of the Constitution envisioned representatives who would advance the interests of their entire district, state, or nation. Today, many citizens worry that partisan pressures have made that goal more difficult to achieve.

Election integrity matters—and so does public confidence.

At a recent LeaderEthics event in La Crosse, Tom Barrett and J.B. Van Hollen answered audience questions on Wisconsin elections. Their conclusion: while no election system is flawless, Wisconsinites can have confidence in the integrity of our election process.

Constructive dialogue helps strengthen democracy.

A local non-partisan organization hosted an event to discuss the integrity of the election process ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
