Every June 2nd, communities across the country come together to connect with the Mississippi River — the lifeblood of our nation and the people, land, water, and wildlife it sustains. 1 Mississippi in coordination with our Mississippi River Network members and partners, launched in 2025 to make that celebration an annual tradition.

Spanning approximately 2,350 miles from the wild rice beds in northern Minnesota to the oyster reefs in southern Louisiana, the Mississippi River is more than a waterway; it’s a symbol of connection. It touches 10 mainstem states, while draining a total of 32 states in its watershed, and provides drinking water for over 20 million people. Along its banks, it powers industries, grows food, supports tourism and recreation, and serves as the economic backbone of the region.

The latest Sustainability Chat from the Sustainability Institute highlights how it was incredibly lucky and grateful to have two amazing interns from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse working as 2026 Earth Fair interns. Their goal? Create an interactive experience at Earth Fair that incorporates art and provides a welcoming experience to all fairgoers.

Incorporating a photo opportunity, the interactive art piece became a front and center aspect of this year's Earth Fair, engaging our community in building together. Better yet, their work will now live on past Earth Fair, as the two mural pieces will be showcased this summer at the Holmen and Onalaska Public Libraries for more to enjoy.

World Fish Migration Day is a global awareness campaign celebrated every

human and non-human species, lands, and waters. This day is marked by
celebrations, events, and action campaigns. It serves as a global reminder of
the ecological importance of migratory fish and the need to protect the
rivers, streams, and habitats they depend on to complete their life cycles.

The National Wildlife Federation spearheaded the establishment of Endangered Species Day by Congress and takes this opportunity each year to share the importance of wildlife conservation and restoration efforts for all imperiled species. It is also a perfect time to learn about and celebrate the progress made to protect wildlife since the creation of the Endangered Species Act in 1973. Go to nwf.org/ to learn more.

World Migratory Bird Day is officially celebrated every year on the second Saturday in May - this year it's May 9th - as migratory birds journey to nesting sites, and on the second Saturday in October ( October 10th in 2026 ) as they return to wintering areas.

The theme for World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2026, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observation Matters”, highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats and factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them.

Community science, ranging from backyard bird counts to large-scale coordinated surveys/schemes, provides information on species distribution, abundance trends, migration timing, and breeding success. This data is important to identify conservation priorities and inform effective conservation action plans and strategies. By engaging individuals and communities in monitoring efforts, we not only gather scientific data but also build a deeper connection to nature, raise awareness about the challenges migratory birds face, and inspire direct conservation action.
