We will gather to watch this year’s UUA General Assembly Sunday Service, a powerful and communal experience – the largest annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists in worship! Come to our sanctuary to watch together, or tune in from your home computer via our Zoom.

Rev. Jen Youngsun Ryu is this year’s featured speaker.

The Rev. Jen Youngsun Ryu (she/her) serves the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene, arriving in 2021 while the building was still closed and the congregation was finding its way back to one another. Born in Seoul and raised in Ohio, she found Unitarian Universalism as a young adult in Baltimore and was drawn to a faith that honors both the tough mind and the tender heart.

After years of lay leadership, she entered seminary in 2002, then spent nearly a decade in parish ministry with the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists, alongside service at the district level and on the UUMA Board. Her vocational path later led her into healthcare chaplaincy, where she specialized in oncology care and earned board certification. Working as a staff chaplain in Charleston deepened her pastoral skills and broadened her interest in spiritual care research.

In the wake of the pandemic, Rev. Ryu felt called back to the parish and to the rhythms of a multigenerational community. This year, she celebrates the 20th anniversary of her ordination with a steady conviction that our liberal faith, practiced with honesty and love, changes lives for the good.

The times we live in challenge us. Now you might say: yes, that’s always been the case. That’s true, but it seems that—more so than in many decades—we’ve entered a period where so many certainties, fundamental truths, and core values are being shaken up. And where, then, should we find our focus, our salvation, and our joy? A higher power, a worldly power, ourselves, one another? How do we ensure that we not only survive, but truly live? These are certainly not simple questions, but they are important. We will have to search for the key. And it may be closer than we think. Let’s go find it!

Jazz and the Social Conscience. A nod to jazz and its contributions and struggles with social justice. While we learn and unlearn prejudicial and biased actions, spoken words, and internal processing, jazz plays a role as both a creative outlet for many marginalized musicians, as well as providing a platform to bring about change.
