Did you know?

Main Hall was the first building on campus! Constructed in 1908, it originally opened its doors to train elementary and secondary school teachers. It also housed a gymnasium, auditorium, laboratories, classrooms, and library.

In 1997, the building was given its current name, Graff Main Hall, in honor of former Vice Chancellor Maurice O. Graff.

Check out these photos of Main Hall from 1910-1915, courtesy of UWL Murphy Library Special Collections!

Alumni Spotlight: Justin Schmitz, ’11

UWL alumnus Justin Schmitz has earned a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Sound Design for his work on the production "hang".

A graduate of UWL's Theatre Arts program, Schmitz is an award-winning sound designer, composer, and theater artist whose work continues to make an impact on stages across the country.

Reflecting on the honor, Schmitz credits his time at UWL with helping shape his career and artistic journey.

"Receiving a Helen Hayes Award is truly a dream come true. This is one of the highest honors I could ever receive in my life, and it is in no small part a testament to the experience I had at UWL."

Congratulations, Justin, on this incredible achievement. The UWL community is proud to celebrate your success! 🦅

Thank you to the alumni and friends who joined us in Milwaukee for an evening of connection and conversation.

Chancellor James Beeby, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement & Foundation President Allison Ziegelman ('07), School of Education Dean Marcie Wycoff-Horn, and Health Professions Chair Tom Kernozek shared updates from across the university and engaged in meaningful discussions about UWL's continued growth and impact.

Alongside Kernozek, Grace Rudek ('26) spoke about her experience in the Physical Therapy program at UWL. Wycoff-Horn was joined by Laine Johannes and Maddie Krueger, students participating in Milwaukee Urban Experience, who shared about the impact of their education.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with our alumni and friends and thank everyone who joined us to celebrate and support the future of UWL.
