The Maine Chapter promotes the profession of physical therapy while providing quality PT services.

Our original keynote was needed in Western Africa as part of her global work to develop the field of physiotherapy. Luckily, Mike Studer has stepped in and will be delivering the keynote address at this year’s conference. We are excited to welcome him to Maine and welcome him to our conference.

Dr. Studer has been a PT since 1991, and has the unique distinction of being an active clinician with board certified expertise in neurologic rehabilitation for over 30 years. Mike is the only therapist that has been recognized as the national Clinician of the Year in two different Academies of the American Physical Therapy Association – the Neurologic and Geriatric, respectively. He is well-traveled invited speaker, having delivered over 1200 full-day lecturesacross all 50 states, 17 different countries and within 6 different continents. Dr. Studer is among fewer than 500 therapists to be distinguished as a Fellow of the APTA. He has authored over 50articles, 8 book chapters and two books, The Brain That Chooses Itself, a practical and applications-based guide to increasing both healthspan and lifespan for laypersons and medical professionals alike, and My Face Book: Looking Beyond what the Mirror Tells Us in Crisis.

New bills can be proposed once every other year, and we are coming up on that time!

CEUs are (finally) coming to Maine next year!

The Maine Board of Examiners in Physical Therapy is has proposed continuing education requirements for PTs and PTAs for our next license renewal cycle (March 2027).

What the Board Has Proposed
-PTs: 12 hours per year
-PTAs: 6 hours per year
-Ethics: 3 hours per year
-CEUs could be earned through in-person or virtual conference presentations, academic courses, residency curricula, and other courses or webinars related to physical therapy practice. Some hours could also be earned by teaching courses, leading grand rounds, publishing articles, completing independent study, or participating in in-services.

What APTA Maine Recommended to the board:
-A two-year renewal cycle with 24 total hours every two years
-2 hours of ethics and/or jurisprudence each biennial cycle
-1 hour per cycle of mandatory reporter training on child and elder abuse
-Accreditation of CEUs through FSBPT, APTA, and all APTA chapters, academies, and sections

Meet Garrett Sasseville, APTA Maine's Student Council Representative! 🎓

We asked Garrett what drew him to this role, and here's what he shared: "This has inspired me to pursue a role where I can strengthen the connection between students, the Maine Chapter, and the national APTA Student Council."

As our Student Council Rep, Garrett will serve as a voice for physical therapy students across Maine and help keep them informed and engaged at both the chapter and national level.

Tomorrow morning, the Maine Physical Therapy License Board will present its proposal for continuing education requirements for Maine licensees.

Members of the public are always welcome to attend these meetings. This month's meeting will focus on the process of joining the Physical Therapy Compact, including continuing education requirements and a presentation from a representative of FSBPT.

As always, the Maine APTA will be present to report back to members on the work of the board and advocate for members.
