La Conner Community News is looking for a friendly, organized and community-minded advertising salesperson to help local businesses connect with the people who live, work and shop in La Conner and the surrounding Skagit Valley.

We’re a locally owned nonprofit newspaper covering La Conner and the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. We believe strong local businesses and strong local journalism depend on each other — and we’re looking for someone who can help build those relationships.

This is a part-time position for someone who enjoys meeting people, understands the value of local business and isn’t afraid to pick up the phone, walk into a shop or follow up until a conversation turns into a sale.

*What you’ll do*

Build relationships with local businesses, nonprofits and community organizations.

Sell print and digital advertising in La Conner Community News.

Reach out to current, former and prospective advertisers by phone, email and in person.

Help businesses choose advertising options that fit their goals and budgets.

Develop new accounts while maintaining strong relationships with existing advertisers.

Sell seasonal advertising, special sections, sponsorships and other promotional opportunities.

Keep accurate notes on prospects, follow-ups and sales.

Work closely with our publisher, designers and production team to make sure advertisers are taken care of from sale through publication.

Be an ambassador for La Conner Community News in the community.

*Who we’re looking for*

You don’t necessarily need newspaper advertising experience. You do need to be comfortable talking with people and asking for the sale.

You may be a great fit if you:

Know and enjoy the La Conner and Skagit Valley business community.

Are outgoing, personable and comfortable starting conversations.

Follow through and keep your commitments.

Can work independently without needing someone to manage every hour of your day.

Are organized and comfortable keeping track of multiple prospects and deadlines.

Can listen to what a customer needs rather than simply selling them a package.

Believe locally owned businesses and independent local journalism are worth supporting.

Previous experience in advertising, sales, fundraising, hospitality, retail, business development or community outreach is helpful but not required.

La Conner Community News is an independent nonprofit weekly newspaper serving La Conner and the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. We launched in 2025 because our community believed it deserved a strong local newspaper.

We cover the people, businesses, governments, schools, arts, sports and events that make this place home. In our first year, our journalism earned 26 Washington Newspaper Publishers Association awards for reporting, photography, design and digital journalism.

We’re small, ambitious and deeply local — and we’re building a sustainable newspaper that can serve this community for years to come.
