Our comic book is being dedicated to our dear friend Subrina Wood who passed last year from pancreatic cancer. Subrina was our Treasurer, a founding board member and someone who brought joy into our lives.

Our comic book is going to honor her through the S.U.B.R.I.N.A. This is a highly sophisticated computer system that stands for “Smart, Unified Biomarker Research and Intelligence for Next-Generation Advances”. The S.U.B.R.I.N.A. coordinates patient care across all disciplines to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient. She does a couple other cool things too! She has a "co-worker" that we look forward to announcing in the future. Stay tuned for updates!

We miss you and will keep your memory alive through S.U.B.R.I.N.A.

Meet our STEAM Superheroes!!! This amazing group works together to fight cancer. We look forward to sharing our comic book January 2027, dedicated to Subrina Wood who passed away last year from pancreatic cancer. Marian Smothers will be a guest at the Star Trek Las Vegas show at the Rio hotel on Friday, August 7th. At 11:15 she will be on a panel with SyFy Sistas™️ titled, "The Nichelle I knew and the Uhura we needed." Marian is excited to share stories about her sister and connect with the Star Trek fans. Dieuwertje "DJ" Kast, Ed.D., is the Director of STEM Education Programs at USC's Joint Educational Project, where she leads initiatives that expand equitable access to STEM for underserved communities. She has reached more than 31,000 students and 900 educators through hands-on, inquiry-based STEM learning and serves as the broader impacts coordinator for multiple NSF-funded projects.

DJ is the coordinator of a STEAM children's book series featuring diverse scientists, with over 250,000 free books distributed to families in underserved Los Angeles communities. An award-winning STEM educator, researcher, and advocate, she is dedicated to creating inclusive, culturally relevant STEM experiences that inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

STEAM Superheroes is excited to announce that Dr. W. Martin Kast is our science advisor for our new comic book focused on superheroes who fight cancer. He got his PhD summa cm laude in Medicine in 1987 from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He held faculty positions at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the University of Leiden, the University of Pittsburgh, and Loyola University Chicago. He currently holds the Walter A. Richter Chair in Cancer Research and is a Professor of Immunology & Immunotherapeutics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Urology and Otolaryngology at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Southern California. His human papillomavirus (HPV) research ranges from basic science to the development of immunotherapies of HPV induced (pre-)cancers and several of his immunotherapies have been tried out in clinical trials. He has published >300 peer reviewed articles and holds 18 patents. His articles have been quoted >31,000 times (Google Scholar). From 2012 -2019 he served as the secretary/treasurer of the International Papillomavirus Society (IPVS). Since October 2025, he is a member of the IPVS Education Committee and recently gave a webinar about therapeutic HPV vaccines that was followed by >600 people in 112 countries. In 2022, he co-authored the book Oncology that is meant for elementary school students with his daughter Dr. DJ Kast: STEAM-Powered Series: Oncology.

STEAM Superheroes wants to thank Armin Shimerman for spending time with the students at the Chrysalis school in Uganda. They LOVE Star Trek and Deep Space Nine and it was such a special experience to meet Armin. Ben Parkinson the headmaster shared, "It was really a great session, and Armin was so good at interacting with the students and helping develop their confidence. The kids have been talking about the session all day."

Our mission at STEAM Superheroes is to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in STEAM. For these students meeting their Star Trek hero, they realize that anything is possible.

Thank you for inspiring and making them believe in themselves.

A big shoutout to THE FLEET A Star Trek Costuming Fan Group for inviting us to share their booth event on Sunday, April 26th. We met so many amazing young people who got to be “The Captain” and sit in the Star Trek chair! A special thank you to and for the invite. Our love of Star Trek and Nichelle Nichols was the driving force behind STEAM Superheroes.
