L’Anse Jr/Sr High School Introduces 3D Printing to Enhance STEM Education
In an exciting step toward advancing STEM education, L’Anse Jr/Sr High School is incorporating 3D printing technology into its middle school science curriculum. The school is acquiring two 3D printers thanks to a $1,000 grant awarded by the L’Anse Area Schools Foundation.
The initiative aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills by introducing students to real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Early exposure to 3D printing technology is expected to inspire students to consider careers in engineering and other technology fields.
“This is about more than just printing models,” said Kinnon Kurtycz, LAS Jr/Sr High science teacher. “It’s about empowering students with the skills and tools they’ll need in the future. From learning CAD software to solving real-world problems, this technology will prepare them for tomorrow’s challenges.”
The program is designed to integrate 3D printing into project-based learning, allowing students to design, create, and refine their own scientific models. By using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, students will gain valuable experience with skills that are essential in STEM fields.
“These printers will be accessible to all students in grades 6–12 and will play a key role in our STEM curriculum throughout the school year,” Mr. Kurtycz added. “Our hope is that these hands-on experiences spark a lifelong interest in science and technology.”
The timetable for implementation is straightforward. Once the 3D printers are received, they will be set up and integrated into the classroom immediately. Teachers will receive training on the use of the printers and CAD software, ensuring a smooth transition into this innovative form of learning.
The $1,000 grant from the L’Anse Area Schools Foundation will cover the cost of acquiring the 3D printers and printing filament, making this cutting-edge technology more accessible to students. “We are deeply grateful to the Foundation for supporting this initiative,” said Mr. Kurtycz. “Their investment will have a lasting impact on our students and school community.”
Success will be measured through various student assessments, including evaluations of projects and reflection on the learning process. Administrators and teachers alike are eager to see how this technology enhances student engagement and supports learning outcomes.
With this initiative, L’Anse Jr/Sr High School continues its commitment to providing students with modern, dynamic educational experiences that prepare them for success in the 21st-century workforce.
