Cosmo is still looking for a home!

This sweet, loving 3 year old Australian Shepherd is dog friendly, gentle, and submissive. He loves to play, is smart, and lower energy compared to other Aussies.

He loves to cuddle and will gaze at you with his marbled-colored blue and brown eyes. He is about 50 lbs, and loves to rest his weight on you like a stress blanket. He is a true Velcro dog and wants to be your shadow. He struggles with separation anxiety and would like a home where someone is usually around, but is kennel trained and can be left alone for up to 3-4 hours at a time.

This goofy, loyal boy loves sitting in a bucket of water on a hot day, and has a gorgeous, fluffy tail that needs regular brushing. He can be on the shy side at first, but makes friends with people and other dogs, and is over all easy going. Even when other dogs have bullied him, this good boy just rolls over and tries to please.

Cosmo is currently being fostered in Houston, but is available for adoption anywhere in the US.

You can apply at herdinghomerescue.com/adopt ❤️

Meet Merlin: An adorably fluffy 1.5-2Y Toy Aussie who was rescued from the euthanasia list at a Houston-area shelter.

Don’t let his 17lb size fool you, Merlin shows a lot of working/herding breed traits and is a bundle of fun and energy… he can easily match the physical activity of a dog 2-3x his size!

Merlin’s top characteristics:
💞 Very friendly and affectionate! He is sweet with new people (and at the vet!)

🔐 Distinctively loyal to his own people

🧠 Highly intelligent and motivated - picked up most of his basic obedience very quickly

🦴 Motivated by food and toys

🚗 Good in the car

🧩 Active, but very easy to entertain. Merlin loves fetch, tug, flirt poles, chasing the jet setting on a hose (his fav and great for a hot day), squeaky toys. He may be small but he is young and NOT a couch potato - he is at his best when he gets at least 2-3 hours of exercise and enrichment per day (walks/jogs, backyard play, puzzle treats, training, etc.)

🐈 Good with other dogs and cats (he lives with 2 dogs and 3 cats and has met several other new dogs). He can be very herd-y when another dog is running, especially a new dog, so would not recommend him for a dog park setting

Merlin’s work-in-progress:
🤍 He has likely been roughly handled in the past (likely by a dog catcher, since he was a stray) and is sensitive to being pushed into a confined space, like a crate. He is pretty tolerant with collar handling when it’s gentle and by someone he trusts, and he does go into a crate willingly when a treat is tossed/his food is in a crate and can settle down in there.
💜 On walks, He has been showing some interest in herding large trucks and likes to bark at runners. He’s not difficult to redirect and isn’t difficult to handle (being so small). Getting some of his energy out before a walk (with a 5-10 min play session) has significantly reduced these instances
💙 He is jumpy for attention! He is still working on improving his manners when he gets excited to see you
💛 He’s marked in the house and needed a belly band, but hopefully (now that he’s freshly neutered), that’ll improve.

Being married to an animal lover means occasionally coming home to a house full of random strays!

Introducing the Latte Litter - these 5 Heeler puppies were going to be put down by a rural county shelter for “behavior” at only 8 weeks old. They’d tremble in fear, refuse treats, protect each other, and even growl/bite… very unusual behavior for even stray puppies of this age. They were not just unsocialized, they were feral and extremely fearful. In their short 2 months on this planet, they had already experienced the worst of humanity.

Fortunately, 3 of our fosters have since stepped up to rescue them from euthanasia. Since being split up into different foster homes, with confident adult dogs to guide their way, they’ve come out of their shell and are starting to act like actual puppies. They’re learning to play, sit, fetch, and trust.

We are still looking for 2 more fosters so we can completely divide them up. They rehabilitate much quicker when separated. There are 3 males and 2 females. If you live local to Austin Tx and could use some puppy love, please fill out our foster application via our website, herdinghomerescue.com/foster

Is your crazy herding dog looking for a friend to help tire them out?

Meet Alpine!

This rootin’ tootin’ cowgirl is ready to join your next adventure! Alpine is a trusty 1 year old border collie puppy, full of sweetness, play, and cuddles. She’d be glad to join you on an off leash hike during the day, then snuggling up to you on the couch at night. She just wants to be by your side.

She is friendly, outgoing, and the definition of Man’s Best Friend. She loves to splash in the water and run through the fields. Thanks to her slick coat, she is easy to brush and wipe down, making her the perfect camping buddy.

Apply to adopt Alpine, or show her profile to your friends and family this Thanksgiving!

No matter where you live in the US, we can get her to you. She comes spayed and up-to-date on vetting.

“I could never foster! I would fall in love with every dog”

That’s the point: these dogs need love… some have never even experienced it before.

-To foster is to share your joy, while shouldering their pain.
-It’s to compromise your own comfort to replenish theirs.
-It’s to experience the worst of humanity, to be its counterweight.

Fosters give up a future with their dog to ensure the dog has a future at all.

That all takes a tremendous amount of love. If you would fall in love with every foster dog, you’re exactly who they need.

Meet Luffy 🐾

This 3 year old mini Aussie was surrendered to no fault of his own. This 20 lb nugget is cat, dog, chicken, and kid friendly. He has a happy-go-lucky, go-with-the-flow attitude and immediately assimilated into his foster family’s life, going to the gym and workplace with them. He is crate trained, housebroken, and over all the perfect little sidekick.

It didn’t take long for his fosters to get attached, so he’ll be staying right where he is. Now that he’s neutered, they’ll be officially adopting him!

Want a Luffy? Fosters get priority when it comes to adoption! Fostering is a great way to test drive a new breed, free up space at the kennels, or get first in line when your dream dog comes in. Fostering is single-handedly the most effective way to alleviate the shelter crisis.

To learn more about fostering, and to apply to foster with us, visit our website herdinghomerescue.com/foster (linked in our bio).

At this time, we are looking for fosters local to Central Tx. We do transfer dogs out of state for permanent adoption.

Our rescue already has a Dire Wolf: her name is Sadie, and the shelter almost euthanized her.

This sweet, gentle girl would never hurt a fly, but has extreme amounts of trauma. We regularly take in behavioral cases, and she’s probably in the top 3 of most traumatized. Her level of fear is comparable to our Korean Meat Trade dogs (dogs rescued from illegal dog meat slaughterhouses in Korea).

Even after months of rehab in foster care, she is only just now starting to explore the world outside her kennel, and shakes like a leaf if you approach her.

Despite only being about 2 years old, she has one of the worst heartworm infestations we’ve ever seen. The parasites migrated to her lungs, and she required a cardiologist specialist to see her through her treatment. We are thousands of dollars deep into her care, and are still working on fundraising for the rest of it. She just finished her last immiticide injection, and has 4 weeks left of crate rest before her treatment is (hopefully) complete.

If you can chip in to save this rescued Dire Wolf, we accept Venmo, Paypal, Zelle, and Card for tax deductible donations.

Thank you to and her other donors thus far.

Just a reminder: Wolves are wild animals.. not pets. We discourage the breeding of wolf dog hybrids. They require very specialized care, and even with proper facilities, they end up in rescue due to being difficult exotic animals to safely own. It may also be illegal where you live. Sadie is not a wolfdog, she is just a pretty little angel.

13 Aussies need FOSTERS through FREEZE 🥶

These Australian Shepherds were living outside with little protection from the elements. They hadn’t seen a vet in years, and some needed serious medical attention. They were under-socialized as well; most didn’t know how to walk on leash, ride in cars, or climb stairs.

We took in the whole lot, and distributed them around the country to rescue partners and adopters alike.

But there are still 13 Aussies left in need of fosters, and it is COLD. Texas is in a deep freeze, and those left are packed in our kennel building, living out of pop-up kennels, just to keep warm.

If you live in Central Tx and can help, please apply to foster at herdinghomerescue.com/foster (link in our bio).

Can’t foster? Please consider donating toward supplies like jackets, blankets, space heaters, and a new generator.
