Community and village collaborations have brought many amazing opportunities for our youth to uplift food sovereignty efforts.

We had the opportunity to work with the Village of Walpi youth group and facilitate a lasagna bed training for the First Mesa youth. The youth enjoyed learning the process of establishing their own bio-intensive growing space at the community garden space near the old Polacca Day School campus.

Youth were hands-on digging and moving the earth to create a community garden. Laughter and encouragement filled the garden space and they put in some transplants to immediately make use of the garden. Seeing the joy and pride the youth carried as they completed this project was the highlight of the month.

Askwali/Kuna'ah/Kwa'kwah to the Village of Walpi Youth and Elderly Coordinator Lori, for your tireless efforts in coordinating efforts like this for the youth. We are grateful for this collaboration and look forward to working with you on more projects.

"Tutskwat i'qaatsi" The land is my life.

These words aren't just a phrase. It is the embodiment of who we are as Hopisinom. The natural world is deeply intertwined in our lifeways, and we live by these words. Remembrance of our covenant with the creator and keeper of this Earth. Honoring the seeds that were given to live upon this land, knowing the dedication and sacrifice it will take to thrive in this arid climate.

The Hopi Dry Farming Workshop honored these teachings and much more. We are grateful to those who came out to learn more about dry farming, land stewardship, erosion control, and seed knowledge. Participants were able to learn new methods of planting, see active erosion control structures, engage in traditional knowledge sharing, and share seeds through our seed swap.

A huge Askwali/ Kuna'ah/ Kwa'kwah to the Lomatska family for graciously hosting this workshop at their family field and for providing a delicious traditional meal. We are thankful to create meaningful relations in our community and uplift families dedicated to living our traditional lifeways. Workshops like this bring our community closer and remind us we are all connected and family. Looking towards a healthy future for the seeds.

Unfortunately, our new community space, the Hopi Tutskwa Regional Food Hub, was vandalized last night between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. The facility, which is currently under construction off Hwy 264 near Kykotsmovi, sustained thousands of dollars in damages.

We are seeking the public’s help in identifying those responsible for this destruction. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Hopi Law Enforcement at (928) 734-7340. This incident is currently under investigation, and any information you can provide is crucial.
