Kokomo Community Cats TNR Program is a group of dedicated volunteers striving to improve the lives of free-roaming cats in Kokomo and Howard County. Our TNR program designed to educate the public on community cats, gain support, assist colony caretakers, and look for volunteers willing to assist with TNR in Kokomo. Kokomo Community Cats humanely traps community cats and safely transports them to

a vet to be fixed and vaccinated. The healthy cats are then released to live out their lives without producing kittens, spreading diseases, and being a nuisance. For decades the common practices have been collect and kill. These practices have been proven not to work. Millions of cats are still dying in shelters each year and the cat population has not been reduced but is increasing. With successful TNR programs in place the cats will be able to live out their lives, shelters will not become overrun with cats, and tax dollars will not be spent to house and dispose the surplus of cats. Any free-roaming that may be a stray or feral is a community cat. Feral or wild cats were more than likely born outside and have never had any human contact. They may run when you approach them or keep their distance. These cats are not adoptable unless socialized at a very young age. Trap-Neuter-Return is the most humane and cost effective approach for stray and feral cats. Now in practice for decades in the US after being proven in Europe, scientific studies show that Trap-Neuter-Return improves the lives of feral cats, improves their relationships with the people who live near them, and decreases the size of colonies over time. Spaying and neutering improves the lives of the cats by preventing certain cancers, relieving constant stresses of mating and pregnancy. Mating behaviors cease like roaming, yowling, spraying, unwanted kittens being born under your porch or in your shed, and fighting. These behaviors are seen as a nuisance and the cause of frequent calls to your local animal control.

Unfortunately kitten season is here and they are being given away for free left and right as we speak. Just a reminder, kittens should stay with their moms for a bare minimum of 8 weeks. Many experts say 12 week minimum. Just because they stuck their nose in a food bowl and sampled some kibble does not mean it’s time to shove them out the door. They are often still nursing quite a bit at 8 weeks.

Taking care of kittens is a lot of work and we get that you may be beyond ready to thin the herd at your house but taking them away from their mothers too early can cause a lot of physical and emotional issues as well as malnutrition and even death.

If you are unwilling to care for mom and kittens until they are 8 weeks or older then that is even more of a reason to fix your cat! Pet overpopulation and euthanasia alone should be motivation enough. If you allow your cat to have babies you don’t intend to keep, then be responsible enough and do right by them and don’t give them away before they are physically ready- then fix your cat. There are low cost spay-neuter options available.

Barn homes needed!!! Non-toxic rodent control available.

‼️We need barn cat adopters!‼️

🐾We have several barn cats needing placement. Barn cats are working cats who are feral and do not thrive indoors.

🐾Barn cats are a very effective method of pest control in barns and outdoor areas. Supply them with food, water, and shelter, and let them take care of everything else! The adoption fee for barn cats is just $10, and they come spayed/neutered and vaccinated.

🐾Please note that barn cats should be kept confined in large crates with food, water, and litter boxes for 2-4 weeks to ensure they stay in the area. Barn cats are best adopted in pairs and like to stick together.

Countless male cats are tossed outside, abandoned and gotten rid of every single year because of a mistake their owners are making. They didn’t get them neutered by 5 months and now the boys are spraying. Yes, intact male cats stink and they will mark up your house but the blame solely lies on an owner who decided to adopt a male cat, didn’t fix them, and now the cat is doing what is 100% natural and looking for a mate.

It’s breeding season. Of course they are going to spray. They can’t help it. What you can help is making sure you are neutering them before they start ruining your house. Don’t be cruel to the cat and definitely don’t threaten rescuers that your going to throw them outside. It makes you look bad- not the cat. Animal abandonment is cruel and it’s illegal.

A free neuter and vaccines are the least of your worries when you allow your cat to free roam. At least we now know who to send the bill to. 😹 And yes, we remove the collars every single time. Don’t want them getting choked to death.

Eartipping matters!

05/26/2026

Today is supposed to be about reflection, gratitude for our service members, family, and the unofficial start of summer. And while we absolutely want to pause and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country… we also need to make a very important announcement.

‼️‼️ Our shelter is at critical capacity‼️‼️

This morning, we responded to a tragic situation that resulted in the emergency intake of 6 cats and 2 dogs. Combined with the 10+ litters of puppies and kittens already flooding through our doors this week, owner surrenders continuing to rise, and more and more stray animals going completely unclaimed, we are officially in critical mode.

And we are not using that phrase lightly.

We are doing everything we possibly can to accommodate the animals depending on us: squeezing kennels, utilizing temporary spaces, coordinating fosters, rearranging rooms, and stretching every ounce of our resources.

⚠️But let us be very clear: We do not have the space (nor the staffing/funding) for the volume and pace in which animals are currently entering our care.⚠️

To put this into perspective, we currently have over 200 animals in our care (including fosters).
We do not have the capacity for that.

And it is not slowing down. We already have another 3 dogs and a minimum of 10 more cats scheduled to come in, all without any other options.

To show how serious this situation is, we are opening our doors 7 days a week for the next 2 weeks and waiving adoption fees on all adult dogs and cats.

‼️⏰ Our TEMPORARY Hours ⏰‼️
• Monday / Wednesday / Friday: 12–6
• Tuesday / Thursday / Saturday / Sunday: 12–4

If you’ve been thinking about adding a pet to your family… this is the time.

There are incredible dogs and cats sitting in shelters right now because someone didn’t come back for them. Because someone moved. Because someone had an accidental litter. Because life happened.

They deserve better than waiting in overcrowded kennels while we desperately try to give them the time, attention, and care they deserve.

If you can adopt, foster, volunteer, donate supplies, or even simply share our posts, now is the moment we need this community the most.

We will keep showing up. We just need help carrying the weight.
