When I heard the Survivor Speaker talk about Domestic Violence knew that kids at the local Family Service Association's Domestic Violence Shelter were going through a difficult time and I wanted to help. I created paper tickets and sold them to family and friends for a quarter. After a few months I had saved $40.00 in a sandwich baggie. When I went to Family Services to turn in the money, they enc
ouraged me to see if others would join me and to keep on going. Since then I've had a lot of people join me in efforts to help the kids at the shelter and I've had a lot of great opportunities to work with others who are doing good things there, too. With the help of supportive shelter staff, Family Services Director Judy Dennis, my family and friends, Indiana University Kokomo students and staff, individual community members, local churches, and my good friend Pam Isaac (Shelter Coordinator), Quarter by Quarter has been able to raise over $22,000 to date! How do we do it....mostly we just ask people if they would like to help. Our main fundraiser happens two weekends out of the year when I stand outside local businesses and ask people if they are able to help. I have family, friends, college students, church members, and shelter staff that stand in shifts with me for two days. But I also have been invited to help with lessons for Life Skills classes at the shelter, help with room renovation projects, I've partnered with my school's student council to sell candy, I've participated in vigils and walks. This is an important issue to me. I want the kids at the shelter to know that people in the community care about them and I'm just doing what I think Jesus would want me to do.
