Scouting was highlighted on the AGIPodcast this week as we look to offer the new AI Merit Badge at the University of Scouting at Purdue University presented by IU Health! We will actually have two sessions at the event, one taught by Jason Padgett (from the podcast) and one by our own Michael Witt who uses cutting edge AI in his role at Purdue University!

Quality instructors. Quality environment. Quality classes. Quality experience.

Meet Bryon Haverstick, CNP, Assistant Scout Executive and Chief Operating Officer of Scouting America, Sagamore Council, where he oversees scouting programs and operations across 14 counties in north-central Indiana. Under his leadership, initiatives like the University of Scouting are helping thousands of young people explore emerging fields—including artificial intelligence—while developing the character, leadership, and life skills that Scouting is known for.

• What happens when Scouting meets AI?

• In this episode of AGI School's Out Saturdays, I sat down with Bryon to discuss how Scouting America is preparing young people for a future shaped by artificial intelligence.

• We explored:

→Why AI became one of Scouting's newest merit badges

→ How scouts ages 11-18 are learning AI fundamentals, ethics, deepfakes, and real-world applications

→ The importance of teaching kids to create with technology, not just consume it

→ How AI can help young people develop critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills

→ Why community organizations, parents, and educators all have a role in preparing kids for an AI-powered future

"Our mission is to prepare young people for their futures. Their future is going to include AI."

☀️ Summer Heat & Safety Reminder ☀️

We want to remind everyone to stay safe during the hot summer months. High temperatures and humidity can quickly become dangerous if proper precautions aren’t taken.

🚰 Stay Hydrated

* Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
* Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.
* Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking water.

🌳 Take Frequent Breaks

* If working or playing outside, rest in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
* Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

👕 Dress for the Heat

* Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
* Use hats and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

⚠️ Know the Signs of Heat Illness
Heat Exhaustion:

* Heavy sweating
* Dizziness or weakness
* Nausea
* Muscle cramps
* Cool, clammy skin

Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency):

* Body temperature above 104°F
* Hot, dry skin
* Confusion or altered mental status
* Loss of consciousness

If you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

Check on Others

* Elderly family members, young children, and those with medical conditions are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
* A simple phone call or visit can make a big difference.

Together, we can keep our community safe this summer. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for one another.

📣 Important Membership Renewal Update

Scouting America has announced that the current membership lapse period will be phased out and will end on **December 31, 2026**.

🔹 What Is Changing?

The lapse period has allowed members a short grace period after their renewal date before their membership becomes inactive. As Scouting America moves toward a simpler and more consistent renewal system, this lapse period will gradually be reduced and then eliminated.

📅 Key Dates

✅ Members with an **October 2026** renewal date will be the last to receive the full **two-month lapse period**.

✅ Members with a **November 2026** renewal date will receive a **one-month lapse period**.

✅ Members with a **December 2026** renewal date will receive **no lapse period**.

📅 Beginning January 1, 2027, members must be current in their registration to maintain active status.

Unit leaders, committee members, and families should begin planning ahead to ensure memberships are renewed on time and there is no interruption in participation, advancement, or registration status.

More information will be shared as Scouting America continues implementing its simplified membership and renewal processes.
