Congratulations to our 6 wonderful, successful GROs on your graduation! I wish you continued success in all that you pursue.

The impetus for me to support the borehole project of this GRO team was found – literally – in my lap! On a March evening in 2024, I was reading their interview in the Milwaukee Catholic Herald newspaper. That article checked all of my boxes:

girls helping girls,

an emphasis on education for girls,

donations handled here in Wisconsin,

And most important: meeting the need for something as basic as WATER.

I was already aware of the need for school desks in Malawi. UNICEF desks were getting students off the dirt floors to facilitate their learning.

This opportunity to help with water struck a chord because I had recently received an unexpected, unearned inheritance from a cousin in California – someone I barely knew. In a phone call I explained that if he left me money, I would use it only to help others. Not many months later, he died of cancer at the age of 69, and I received money.

After reading that GRO article I began to see the hand of God at work. I spent time trying to comprehend schools without water. I counted the faucets in my home. I emailed Steve Hamer from the news article. Steve answered my questions in a couple of conversations. I knew in my soul that something good was happening. Steve invited me to meet the GROs at one of their sessions. They explained their application, selection, borehole drilling process. Photos of girls carrying pails of water on their heads before school just left me stunned. I admired their determination to get their education. I admired their daily search for water, even from puddles, to provide for their families. Culturally, getting the water has been the task of daughters in a family.

I donated. It was humbling for me to become a small part in this very practical plan to solve a need on the other side of the world. The GRO’s plan is God’s plan. I have come to understand that WE are the hands of God.

Mateketa Teachers House Update - May 19th, 2026

WASH and .volunteers 2026 Ambassadors had the opportunity to stop and visit the completed Mateketa Teacher’s House. The Teacher’s House was donated by Sarah Hamer, WASH Ambassador 2025 in loving memory of Sadie Buerger.

When visiting last year, the school leaders shared with the WASH 2025 group all of the schools needs to create a better learning opportunities for the community. They shared that many of the teachers had to travel very far distances to and from school each day. Their hope was to build a building to allow teachers to live onsite. With Sarah’s donation it became possible for their dream to come true.

Talandeera’s House - May 19th, 2026

WASH and .volunteers 2026 Ambassadors had the opportunity to stop and visit Talandeera and her family and present them with clothing and chickens.

Last year the 2025 WASH Ambassadors met an amazing little girl and her family while visiting the Kayeramadzi School Borehole.

The family had lost their house a few years prior due to the 2023 cyclone and were in grave need of a home. Talandeera had also recently gone through a horrible accident and injured.

When the WASH ambassadors got to meet Talandeera they saw that this little girl had the brightest smile and such happiness for life. She was a true inspiration!

With the support and love of many WASH 2025 Ambassadors who came together, they helped fund a home to be built for Talandeera and her family as well as helped her receive much needed medical help.

“God’s Answered Prayer” was completed in February 2026
