HARVEST HOUSE, 2025 \\ Material Cultures

As curators of the built environment, Architects have the opportunity and immense responsibility to serve as stewards of our broader ecosystems. In every decision, there is the chance to question convention and understand the greater ecological impact of what we choose to draw, specify, and ultimately build. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 and as we pause to consider where we stand in advancing the intentions of this movement beginning 51 years ago, I would challenge each of us to take stock in what have we accomplished and what we must continue to strive for. The American Institute of Architects provides numerous potent offerings to both educate yourself and take action at all scales. Through programs like the AIA Framework for Design Excellence, the AIA 2030 Commitment, and the AIA Materials Pledge, you can take meaningful steps towards impactful work while advancing the efficacy of Architects as tailors of a world that is just, healthy, and sustainable not just for today, but for those we value and work towards a better future for.
