Bessie Spaur Butterfly Garden

Bessie Spaur Butterfly Garden The Bessie Spaur Butterfly Garden was established in 1994 by Dwight Visser and Ron Huelse. The park benches invite friends to sit and visit.

The garden, located on the south lawn of the Knoxville Area Community Hospital, is sponsored and maintained by the Knoxville Federated Garden Club. If you slow down and take a look around, you can witness magic happening all around. ✨☀️ This new super generation monarch butterfly is sure to enjoy the garden in full bloom as it prepares for its migration south to Mexico for the winter. 🐛🦋

So many great projects have been completed at the butterfly garden this summer! ☀️

🦋 New garden shed donated by KHC to replace the old one that was in need of repair.

🦋 Installation of soaker hoses and timers across all garden plots to lighten the load of watering for garden plot volunteers.

🦋 New concrete patio and shade structure for the picnic table area, complete with lighting and electrical outlets.

🦋 Butterfly sculpture installed in former blue star memorial maker bed. This project was a collaboration with Sean Sanger’s welding class at Knoxville High School, Weiler and garden club. Renovation of this garden bed will begin soon now that the sculpture is in place.

🦋 Revitalization prune of the lilac bushes after their spring bloom, with the most beautiful zinnia bed planted as the lilacs fill back out.

🦋Work-in-Progress: revitalization of the ‘east bank’ of the garden, including repair of drainage, taking down dead/dying trees, and a plan for a greater focus on pollinator friendly plantings in that area. Pardon our progress in this area this fall and next spring!

Come take a walk through the garden and enjoy! ☀️
