We know that adjunct working conditions transcend any single campus, public/private schools, and education systems. To build and carry out effective strategies for change we need organization. For more than a decade higher education employees in Tennessee have been organizing together building a strong voice that belongs to us, that is run by us, and that is advocating for our interests on our cam
puses, at the TBR and UT system levels, and at the Legislature. That voice is United Campus Workers - Communications Workers of America, Tennessee's higher education union. A key aspect of UCW's organizing has focused on improving pay, job security, and working conditions for so-called "contingent" faculty members - employees who teach in non-tenured/tenure-track jobs with titles of Adjunct, Lecturer, Graduate Teaching Assistant, Full Time Temporary, Instructor, etc. Through our collective efforts we have won real victories on campuses across Tennessee, including right here in Middle Tennessee. But there is so much more for which we must fight, and no better time than the present. That is why this semester we are launching "The Nashville Adjunct Project" to bring together adjunct faculty from all campuses across Middle Tennessee to share information, strategize and identify solutions, and build winning campaigns that will transform our working lives, our classrooms, our students' education, and our institutions. http://www.ucw-cwa.org/join-us
