The Tennessee Juniors Science and Humanities Symposium gives high school students a chance to present original scientific research in a public forum and compete for scholarships. The Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (TJSHS) is an annual two-day scientific research competition for high school students to present original research in a public forum. The University of Tennessee Colle

ge of Arts and Sciences administers the regional affiliated event of the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium through the Academy of Applied Science in cooperation with leading research universities throughout the nation. Attending students and teachers will have the chance to visit research laboratories at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee where participants will learn about cutting-edge research and meet internationally renowned researchers. The mission of TJSHS is to promote and foster research and experimentation in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines at the high school level. The JSHS is jointly sponsored by the research offices of the US Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force with the aim of advancing the nation’s scientific and technological progress by challenging and engaging students in the STEM disciplines. Meals and lodging during the conference are covered for up to three students and one teacher mentor. Limited funds are available for substitutes to cover the classrooms of the teacher mentor or chaperone.

The Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium was held February 14-15, 2025.

High schoolers from across the state of Tennessee presented their original research, participated in a college and departmental fair, heard from fantastic speakers, and toured Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Thank you to our fantastic campus and community partners who made this event possible!

The Pre-College Research Excellence Programs hosted the Tennessee Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium on March 9-10, 2023!

The top 5 finalists were invited to the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium on April 13-14,2023 located in Virginia Beach, VA.

Of course, students would not be where they are now without the support of their family, teachers and friends.

Last week, the top five Tennessee Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium student finalists attended the National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium in Virginia Beach, VA from April 13-14, 2023.

Students from Oak Ridge Schools, Central Magnet School, Farragut High School and McCallie School represented Tennessee well and even got an honorable mention!

I had the honor of attending the symposium as the Tennesee Regional Director representing The University of Tennessee Undergraduate Admissions & Pre-College Reseach Excellence Programs Department. And of course, chaperoning these intelligent students!

About TJSHS:

The Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (TJSHS) gives high school students a chance to present original scientific research in a public forum and compete for scholarships.

JSHS is a Department of Defense (DoD) sponsored STEM program (U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense and the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force) that encourages high school students to conduct original research in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

JSHS is a collaborative effort between the research arm of the DoD and nationwide colleges and universities. JSHS aims to prepare and support students to contribute as future scientists and engineers, conducting STEM research on behalf of or directly for the DoD, and federal research laboratories to help advance the nation’s scientific and technological progress.
