Living in Washington at the moment, hopefully aught is well as can be un Tenneessee ^^

Long time no post here, much ado aside nearing relocation to Washington without full preparation as of yet, but hopefully the spirit of this group and its message will flourish this semester by some outlet or another! I have a suspicious it will be revived next semester with a friend currently not attending, though time will tell, and regardless I am proud of what we could accomplish in the few years helming this isolated branch in the bible belt ;)

Good Afternoon SSA and All,

Some interesting events of late, including two recent trips to Nashville over the past several days - the first being for NaNoCon 2018, and the second to attend to lecture/sermon by Dr. Frank Turek, a Christian apologist. My comrade physicist in the Rationalists of East Tennessee, Lee, made the trip together for the latter and offered many questions after, and I feel it was fruitful, though more so from conversing with other attendees rather than someone who repeats their speech almost literally word for word on a book tour with a vested reason to not be shown any errors in their platform, logic, and harmful, placating rhetoric.

A reminder for this evening on Hardin Valley campus, there is to be a speech with Q&A by a Christian apologist, Mark Slaughter, and students of the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship from 1700-1900 in the Goins Auditorium GN136 (Cafeteria Annex if poor weather, it is stated).

At least Lee and I plan to attend and partake in questions after, and do recommend for all to do so likewise, for not only perspective but also to hopefully impart some benevolent skepticism in promoting the pursuit of truth, and uplifting the values of proactive empathy and more broad consideration, following the evidence wherever it leads as opposed to leading the evidence to a presuppositional conclusion.

In Reason,
Ryv

Q&A in the rotunda again from 1230-1400, please do not hesitate to strike a conversation in passing or sitting, or inquire further about the SSA on whole - weekly gathering in the dining facility on Wednesday in the same time block :D

10/29/2017

In the rotunda on Monday again, answering questions and hopefully engaging dialogue, anyone is welcome to join and make discussion (or read in silence, etc.) ^^;

Info and Q&A booth this Monday at 1230-1400 in the rotunda, and meeting on Wednesday at 1230-1400 in the dining facility - look for the little triangle with the SSA sticker on it, and hopefully the updated poster will be completed by then ^^;

Update here, the filing for reactivation was made some time ago and we are awaiting approval and further coordination. For next Wednesday's Club Access, I shall strive to secure a central location at the cross walk between MCW and Administration buildings for optimal exposure (as well secure or provide a tent for shade!). Even being a shimmering stone of freethought in the rock piles of ubiquitous religiosity, it seems we are not sufficiently known on campus, which is unfortunate for the many closeted atheists and skeptics challenging their religion who might otherwise be keen to take interest.

Hopefully that changes at least notably this semester and going forward.

See you all on campus soon~

Fall 2017 semester commencing soon enough, and this should be my last semester in Tennessee, so hopefully we can start strong and transition to others taking the helm going forward!

I think it's important to recognise that our organization is not like a chess club or bible study in and of itself, but as well a point of refuge for people to feel welcome and have respite from the overwhelmingly religious society around these parts in open discussion, drawing upon and lending to others comfort and suggestions for how to handle contentious matters - in addition to setting an example for others in contributing in ways around campus, that secular values are moral values as defined by empathy and awareness of the world in which we share space.

Here's to another semester \(^w^)/

02/14/2017

Good morning ^w^/

Hopefully it is not too late to garner interest in the SSA and find people who participated and who were interested yet less feasibly able to attend last semester.

Regardless, a beacon shall light a few or so times per week in the rotunda with my trusty table and sign, although this will be larger and likely gain more attention in those passing.

Rather than the logo alone, it would ideally be a spread of words and questions, and timelines of religions, and civil movements and ethical normalcy changes over the years leading to a world mixed of secular progress and unchanging dogma. Socratic method of course all throughout for anyone who is bothered by displaying history and challenging one to think critically.

An update should not be far out~

01/18/2017

Today I meet with Student Life to discuss the SSA and when we can we begin in earnest this semester and shall update when more is known. The major logistical and bureaucratic endeavours were grinded through last semester, so there should be less processing going forward.

Reminder here for this week's informal gathering, which technically should be available to hold in GN 227(224?) though I am not positive that has been cleared as of yet, so to be safe this week let us meet again in the dining facility at 330 PM EDT in the corner closer to interior than exterior (the "quiet corner") where this prop designates the location:
