It was a special morning with the as we welcomed Senator Lamar Alexander, former U.S. Senator and Governor of Tennessee, for a conversation about his new memoir, The Education of a Senator: From JFK to Trump.

Joined by longtime friend and colleague Darrell Akins, Senator Alexander reflected on the experiences and lessons that shaped his career in public service. The discussion touched on the origins of the Oak Ridge Corridor, lessons learned from Senator Howard Baker, Tennessee’s transformation during his years as governor, and the importance of working with people who may not always agree in order to achieve meaningful results.

The conversation was a thoughtful reminder of the leadership, vision, and collaboration that continue to shape Tennessee and the Oak Ridge Corridor today.

Thanks to AtkinsRéalis for sponsoring this month’s Friday morning meetings.

This morning, the welcomed Hasmukh Ranjan, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at AMD, for a discussion on technology, innovation, and the evolving role of advanced computing.

Former ORNL Director and current AMD Senior Vice President Thomas Zacharia introduced the speaker and program. Ranjan shared insights on the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and the infrastructure needed to support it, including the increasing demands on computing power, data centers, and energy. He also discussed AMD's partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the role advanced computing continues to play in research, industry, and innovation.

The discussion reinforced how closely the future of AI, computing, and energy are becoming intertwined, and why those conversations matter in the Oak Ridge Corridor.

Some of the region’s most important conversations start with people in the room.

During last Friday’s discussion, Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank and Roane County Executive Wade Creswell reflected on leadership, regional alignment, and the importance of bringing people together around a shared vision.

They said leadership is the power to convene, and that alignment requires people leaning in and working together every day.

Mayor Creswell recalled a specific conversation that began at an ETEC meeting nearly three years ago, sparking the alignment and collaboration seen across the region today.

At ETEC, our goal every Friday and at events throughout the year is to create opportunities for leaders to connect with purpose.

It is exciting to know that the conversations happening in the room today can shape the partnerships, alignment, and progress that move the region forward tomorrow.

Students, interns, and postdoctoral researchers are invited to attend the Nuclear Opportunities Workshop (NOW) at a significantly reduced rate-or even for free through the Student Engagement Option.

NOW 2026 will bring together industry, government, academia, innovators, and students August 4–5 at the Knoxville Convention Center to discuss advanced reactors, fusion, AI, workforce development, fuel cycle innovation, deployment strategy, and more.

Students can earn FREE registration by creating a short social media post or video sharing:
• why they want to attend NOW, or
• a nuclear-related research project or area of interest.

If your organization is hosting interns this summer, encourage them to take part in this opportunity to connect with industry leaders and learn more about the future of nuclear.

Moderated by former Oak Ridge Mayor David Bradshaw, the discussion focused on leadership, public service, regional growth, infrastructure challenges, and the opportunities shaping East Tennessee’s future.

The conversation reflected the strong collaboration taking place across the region as communities work to support continued economic development, population growth, and expanding federal and nuclear-related missions.

Thanks to all of our elected officials for the work they do. Thanks, too, to HII for sponsoring this month’s Friday morning meetings.
