Thank you to everyone who came out and made Femissance such an amazing event!! Hearing how all of you use your jewelry as armor, whether that be emotional support or drawing on the strength of your loved ones who gave you your beloved pieces, and seeing your artistic interpretations was an amazing way to spend our afternoon :)

For our 7th and final Black History Month post, we’re highlighting Miss Major Griffin-Gracy aka Miss Major. She is a transgender activist and a veteran of the Stonewall Riots. Much of her activism is rooted in her own experiences as she works to uplift other trans women of color, particularly those who have been incarcerated or have experienced police brutality. She now runs House of GG, a retreat center for trans and gender non-conforming leaders in the Southern US. Thank you all for your support!

For our 5th Black History Month post, we’re highlighting the amazing Alexis Pauline Gumbs! She is an incredible poet, feminist, and community builder from the Southern USA. In her book, “The M Archive", she looks at society's collapse due to capitalism, greed, and climate change. In response to these situations that cause the collapse of a planet, Gumbs discusses the ways that society can rebuild itself- through love, community, and the embracing of blackness and the "dark feminine". Her website is https://www.alexispauline.com if you want to learn more about her :)

Our second Black History Month post highlights and remembers bell hooks, who was an author, activist, and academic. Most of her work highlighted the intersections of race, gender, class and capitalism, and how these created and perpetuated oppressive systems. The majority of her work focused on feminism and the system of patriarchy, particularly how Black women operate within it. Her work was and still is regarded as some of the most important and revolutionary pieces of political theory. She recently passed away at the age of 69 on December 15, 2021.
