Old Gray Cemetery will host a Flag Day celebration this Sunday, June 14, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 543 North Broadway. During the event, visitors will have an opportunity to view and learn about the recently completed restoration of the historic wrought-iron fence surrounding the cemetery’s 25-foot flagstaff, as well as the restoration of Old Gray’s historic entrance gate. The work was funded through a Tennessee America 250 grant.
Visitors may enjoy guided walking tours highlighting notable individuals buried at Old Gray Cemetery and the site’s significance in Knoxville history. Light refreshments will be available.
Founded in 1850, Old Gray is one of Knoxville’s most important historic landmarks and the final resting place of many individuals who helped shape the city’s development, including Ossoli’s founder Lizzie Crozier French. The cemetery also serves as a nonprofit arboretum dedicated to preserving its historic, cultural, and natural resources.
The Flag Day celebration is free and open to the public.
Blessings, Ellen
