The Lonsdale Nature Explorers went on a one-mile urban hike in their own neighborhood to visit the Ivan Racheff House Gardens and Arboretum. Students mapped out their own route and took a walking field trip to the gardens, where they spent the day planting flowers and vegetables as part of a service learning project.

The wonders of nature discovery are all around us, and today our kiddos learned to look for those wonders right in their own backyards!

A huge thank you to the Sierra Club, Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont, and The Nature Conservancy for partnering with us to bring exciting and engaging opportunities like this one to our students all month long!

Teacher Appreciation Week is off to a yummy start! We love our Lonsdale teachers and their passion for our students and our community. So this week our partners and families are showing Lonsdale’s teachers a little extra love 💙

Thank you to our Leaders for Readers volunteers for the fabulous sandwiches and desserts on Monday, and thank you to our amazing Lonsdale families for preparing a Guatemalan and Mexican style lunch (with cheese cake for dessert!)!

Today our fourth and fifth grade Lonsdale Leaders visited Oakwood Senior Living where they made some new friends. Students read to senior residents and even gifted some of their new friends with Monsters Made with Love, stuffed monsters the students sewed themselves.

“I want to work here when I grow up,” said 5th grader Maria, who can’t wait to return to read to Ms. Beverly again.

Community School in action: Lonsdale’s cafeteria was the place to be this afternoon!

✏️ Students stopped by for some one-on-one homework help

🍎 Healthy Kids Club from East Tennessee Children's Hospital brought nutritious snacks to teach us more about healthy eating habits

📏 We measured EVERYTHING to practice our math skills with Thrive Lonsdale - even our feet!

🎺 And we learned all about genres of music from Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley

👵 Meanwhile, our Foster Grandparents from Knoxville-Knox County CAC Office on Aging kept us company!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Lonsdale RoboBears for taking home SECOND PLACE in Core Values at the First Lego League Robotics State Championship for their extraordinary display of Gracious Professionalism!

The RoboBears have worked all year to build and program a robot of their own design, and to create a project that addresses issues in water conservation. Our students chose to design a rainwater filtration system to install an outdoor water fountain on the playground... talk about problem solving!

Watch out world, these RoboBears are in 4th and 5th grade and are absolutely BRILLIANT! 🤖

What a way to begin the holiday season! Over 300 families had the opportunity to "shop" for their students at the annual Lonsdale Gift Shop this year. This donation-only event raised over $500 for Lonsdale Elementary School and was open to every family in the school. Families shopped for sweatpants, new shoes, and books for their children, and even picked up pre-wrapped gifts to stash under the tree. 🎄

THANK YOU to our partners at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Church Knoxville, Grace Baptist Church, and Cornerstone Church of Knoxville for making this possible.

And a big shoutout to our Lonsdale families for volunteering to staff tables and for raising money for a great cause, and to Knoxville Museum of Art for putting together a fabulous ornament and card-making station.

Santa made a special stop this week!

Santa and our friends at Gerdau Ameristeel stopped by Lonsdale on Monday with plenty of hats and gloves to keep us warm this winter. Just in time for our snowy Friday! ❄️
