New Scientific Research Grant Opportunities in the Smokies:
In 1923, the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association was established to help create a new national park. More than 100 years later, GSMCA continues to support what became Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the nation, by funding scientific research grants through the Carlos C. Campbell and James T. Tanner Memorial Scholarships.

Successful applicants must demonstrate an applied research approach for further conservation of the Park’s resources. If you know of anyone who may be interested in applying for these research-based grants in the Smokies, please direct them to https://www.gsmca.org/memorial-fellowships/ The deadline for grant submission is Friday, December 20.

Today, December 21, marks the 100th anniversary of the moment when an “idea” for a new national park in the eastern United States changed into a “movement.” A group of business and community leaders in Knoxville, Tennessee, sat around a table and established the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association –and charged themselves with making the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that we know and cherish today a distinct reality.

A century later, the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association is still actively supporting Great Smoky Mountains National Park through special grants for projects that demonstrate an applied research approach and produce lasting results for conservation of the Park’s resources.

GSMCA Centennial Turns 100
This December marks the 100th anniversary of the moment when an “idea” for a new national park in the eastern United States changed into a “movement.” A group of business and community leaders in Knoxville, Tennessee, sat around a table and established the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association –and charged themselves with making the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that we know and cherish today a distinct reality.

A new article in the Fall 2023 issue of Smokies Life, written by Albert Bedinger, Paul James, and Ken Wise, details and celebrates our centennial and highlights key visionaries and leaders, such as Willis and Annie Davis, who along with Col. David Chapman and others, led early but pivotal efforts to rally and galvanize support in Knoxville, and Washington D.C.

Welcome to the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association, the organization that, in 1923, was formed in response to Knoxvillians, Willis and Annie Davis, to launch a movement that would help establish a new national park in the eastern United States. It was a long and challenging process but without GSCMA there would simply be no Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
