June is National Safety Month, a time to recognize the importance of safety in every workplace, including correctional facilities.

For the Florida Department of Corrections, staff safety is directly connected to structure, consistency, and population management.

FDC’s Administrative Management Unit, or AMU, is part of the department’s population management strategy. AMUs are general population housing statuses where inmates are placed in a highly structured environment to promote the safety and security of inmates, staff, the public, and the order of the institution.

AMU programming focuses on helping inmates understand that there are alternatives to unproductive and violent lifestyles. It also gives staff a more structured environment to manage, which plays an important role in safety.

FDC established its first AMU at Jackson Correctional Institution.

During National Safety Month, this is an important reminder: staff safety, inmate safety, institutional safety, and public safety are all connected.

Corrections is often done in an empty stadium.

No crowd, no applause, and no audience watching the hard calls, long shifts, or steady professionalism it takes to do the job well.

BOP Director Marshall knows that reality from decades in law enforcement and corrections leadership. His message is a reminder to the men and women working in facilities every day: the mission matters, even when no one is there to cheer you on.

The public may not always see it, but the work still matters.

The Seven Habits may sound simple on paper, but for many people in prison, these are skills they may have never had the chance to fully develop.

Being proactive, thinking ahead, listening before reacting, and working with others instead of against them.

These are not just classroom lessons, they're life skills.

Inside FDC, programs like Seven Habits on the Inside help create structure, accountability, and a foundation participants can return to when they face hard choices, both inside prison and eventually back in society.

Growth does not happen without tools. This program helps give people tools they can actually use.

Graduation season looks different inside prison, but it still matters.

Across the country, men and women are completing GED programs, college courses, vocational training, and other forms of education that help prepare them for life after incarceration.

Juane said it simply: “Prison is a college if you want it to be.”

Knowledge is one of the most powerful building blocks in life. Whether it is educational, vocational, or interpersonal, growth matters.

Today, we remember the men and women who gave everything in service to this country.

We also recognize those in public service who continue to show up for the safety of others — including corrections, law enforcement, first responders, and so many who came from military backgrounds.

Holidays do not stop the work.
Facilities still run, shifts still happen, and families still sacrifice.

Prison can shape a person in more than one direction.

For some, it can deepen the hurt, anger, and survival mindset that brought them there.

For others, when opportunity meets accountability, and staff help create the structure for change to take root, something different can begin.

Most people will return home, but what they return with matters.

Sometimes the strongest support is someone willing to sit, listen, and check in.

While incarcerated, Luis worked in Institutional Peer Support, checking on men in administrative segregation — a place he understood because he had been there himself.

He knew what it felt like to be isolated, angry, struggling, and facing the consequences of his choices. But he also knew what it looked like to grow, change, and keep moving forward.

Have you watched his full Day in the Life episode yet?

Inmate Day in the Life: Luis’s Story goes deeper into his journey, his time in prison, and the growth that helped transform his life.

Mental health challenges do not always look the way people expect.

In this clip, Kristin shares her experience growing up with OCD and how fear, anxiety, and compulsions shaped her life from a young age.

For corrections staff, families, and anyone walking alongside someone who is struggling, her message is simple but important: speak up and ask for help.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, stories like this remind us why understanding, patience, and support matter.

Listen to this before you start your weekend.

We asked Bryan what he would tell the younger generation if they knew then what he knows now.

His answer is honest.
