“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” Mark 8:36 NLT

The insidiousness of po*******hy. The evil that knows no bounds nor recognizes power, position or economic status.

How is this possible, you ask? Jed York, the 46 year old owner of the San Francisco 49ers was recently arrested for solicitation of prostitution. For $140. In a trailer park in a seedy area outside Youngstown, Ohio. A man (a term I use grudgingly) worth over $500-million in a family having wealth exceeding $8.5-billion. Surrendering all for $140.

I would welcome talking with Mr. York and hearing his story of decline. Like so many po*******hy addicts, the start was innocent enough, I’m sure. Curiosity coupled with feelings of inadequacy in a family lavished in the finest things the World can offer. Raised in an environment where expectations were likely too high and pressure intense enough to mask the joy and beauty of what matters, many of us break. The difference between Jed and others, none. Yes, most of us were not surrounded by kingmakers who emphasized the rules don’t apply, being told the World is your oyster. Being trained that people and specifically women exist for your pleasure. ‘You, Jed York, are special and we will insulate you from the realities that are life’s greatest treasures; faith and family.’ Bunk!

To be fair, I know nothing of Mr. York’s value system. I know that he filed for divorce from his wife earlier this year in what I suspect involved her brokenness, asking ‘why she was not enough’ as she lost him to stress, p**n/sexual addiction, dopamine release, isolation…and repeat. To his wife I would say, you lost your husband to an unseen foe who does its greatest work in isolation and overachievement, meant to mask the realities of the disease. To her I would say, he likely held on as long as he could because of you. To her I would encourage, he certainly felt that he did not deserve you and all the cruelty and failure aimed at you were the futile efforts of a man trapped in the mind of a little boy, grasping for anything to hold on to so that his addiction and failings would not be found out. To his wife and sons I would say, you lost to the Evil One, who works in ways to insidious for us to fully grasp.

To Jed, I would say “walk in to the freedom that transparency and honesty will deliver.” The secret is out and life goes on. Reclaim your identity as a man, a husband and the broken father that your two sons can learn so much from. This is not the end. Make this the beginning of something beautiful and something that matters. Jesus came to forgive our sins through grace and mercy that we can never earn nor deserve. Just ask. Now is the opportunity to reposition your life, focused on what matters and most importantly, who can benefit from your story.

The context of Mark 8 was Jesus telling his disciples to not be fooled or have wrong expectations of what was coming. They foresaw a king who would reposition on inequities of the World. He was a Savior who would deliver hope, forgiveness and eternity, through service and humility.

Jed, now is the greatest opportunity for impact that your life has ever been given. What Satan meant for evil can be your greatest good. Go for it.

And, by the way, I am praying for you and your family.

What I have learned through humbling failure that has led to childlike dependency on my Savior is that assignment from God will likely look very different from personal expectation driven by sinful nature. What I am experiencing is that nothing that comes against me will succeed as long as my heart and my trust remains in the One who created me.

“no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD.” Isaiah 54:17 (ESV)

I am learning that there is a shelf-life of enthusiasm for dirty, hard ministry. That the excitement of the stage is oftentimes an oasis that paints a vision designed by the Evil One to defeat our mind. I am learning that impact happens one cup of coffee, one breakfast or lunch, one text, one emergency call; one on one with the person in that moment that God has placed in my path. I am learning that God’s work is not for boasting or fleeting accolades but for eternal purpose. What I have learned is that is more than enough.

I was recently notified that Fight Club Men is losing a major supporter based upon incorrect information. A beautiful reminder that we are all ‘human’ and prone to error. My indignation and frustration quickly giving way to dogged determination to continue what God has instructed. The stories of the many men whose lives are being transformed, one man at a time, still amaze me. Their stories are their personal testimony, that is theirs to share of withhold. The testimony below echoes the beautiful truth of what happens when men are released from the bo***ge of addiction into the incredibly freeing power of Christ through brotherhood and transparency.

“Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11 (NLT)

I hope you have made it this far and will take the time to read this man’s unedited testimony. God is so good, even more so in the face of difficulty. We continue to fight the good fight.

“The moment I heard Myron talk about Fight Club Men and freely and confidently talk about p**n addiction I was stunned for a second. In a room full of men, I instantly felt like he was talking directly to me, and I became washed over with a feeling of relief as I listened to his testimony. I remember talking to myself “so it’s not just me then”. Whether an addiction be from drugs, alcohol, po*******hy, food or all of the above, it can be the greatest obstacle any man will encounter in his life and can lead to tremendous shame and discouragement. That shame might force you to hide away from God and the farther you stray away from Him, the deeper you fall into this addiction, and the more shame can pull you into the darkness with no sign of seeing the light again and keep you from what God has planned for you.
Myron and Fight Club Men can help a man realize that God is always watching over all His children, and you are NOT alone. We are all sinners, we have all been in our own dark places, but we can all still be saved, it is never too late. Just like Psalms 34:18 tells us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”. God is there for you and He still has great plans for you, just seek him out. Fight Club Men awakens you to the fact that you have men fighting addiction just like you are every day and that we need each other. It emphasizes on the concept of “iron sharpens iron”. It would be impossible for one tool to become sharper without the presence of the other and if left alone, both blades would be dull and quite uselessthroughout the battles they endure through their lifetimes.
Because of Fight Club Men I have made some amazing friendships that are straight up warriors and are fighting the same spiritual battle as I have been fighting most of my life. Fighting the enemy that wants condemn you over something that God wants to forgive you for. We help each other learn the difference in condemnation and conviction and that your convictions in life do not impact your future and relationship with God and that it is more about “relationship” not “religion”. Thanks to Myron and Fight Club Men I have emerged from the darkness, learned so many ways to fight back against the enemy, and have gone from deep shame, discouragement, and just being flat out angry at God, to a man that has proudly lead Fight Club Men. A man that is no longer ashamed of my past addiction but use that past to testify to the glory of Godand encourage men that are going through the same battles.
That is why it is so important for each of us to build growing, Christian relationships with others in life, especially us men because we can face addictions women and children do not quite understand. We all need people who can help us sharpen those beaten edges from battle and who honestly have our best interests in mind when they do it because we have all been there. We have all seen the darkness and what it can do to our spirit. Even though there are times when these sharpening conversations can be embarrassing and unpleasant to open up and share, it definitely helps to know that these men care and that they have a genuine interest in helping us improve, to train us how to fight against the relentlessly lurking darkness and become the man of God we seek out to be. If I had never joined Fight Club Men, I am scared to even think of what my life would be like at this point. Would I still be silent, sitting in my darkness all alone? I am so grateful that I do not have to worry about that anymore because of the men who fight for me and each other from Fight Club Men.”

“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 6:12 (ESV)
