Leading from the Front, Leading from Within

One of the most unique aspects of Scouting America is that it is designed to be youth-led. While caring adults provide guidance and encouragement, real leadership happens when Scouts step forward to lead their peers. Whether serving as a Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, Den Chief, or Crew President, young people in Scouting learn leadership by doing.

Leadership is not developed overnight. It grows through experience as Scouts plan activities, lead meetings, solve problems, and work together toward common goals. Along the way, they build confidence, learn responsibility, and discover that leadership is less about giving orders and more about serving others.

Strong youth leadership benefits everyone:

Scouts gain confidence and responsibility.

Patrols become more engaged and effective.

Units deliver stronger programs.

Older Scouts develop mentoring skills.

Future community, business, and civic leaders are shaped.

For adult leaders, it can sometimes be tempting to step in when things do not go as planned. Yet one of the greatest gifts we can give our Scouts is the opportunity to lead, learn, and grow through experience. Our role is not to do the job for them, but to coach, encourage, and help them succeed.

The Mt. Cammerer District has a proud tradition of developing young leaders. Today's Patrol Leaders, Den Chiefs, and Crew Officers are tomorrow's teachers, business owners, first responders, military leaders, pastors, and community servants.

By giving them opportunities to lead today, we help prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities of tomorrow.

Leadership is more than a position. It is a journey of growth, service, and character. Let's continue to empower our Scouts to lead with confidence, integrity, and purpose. ⚜️

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: FALL FAMILY CAMP WEEKEND #1 CANCELED

Dear Scouting Families,

After closely monitoring the weather forecast for our area, the Great Smoky Mountain Council has made the difficult decision to
cancel Fall Family Camp Weekend #1, scheduled for October 9–11, 2026, at Camp Buck Toms, due to the threat of severe
inclement weather.

Our goal is to provide a fun, meaningful, accessible, and enjoyable camping experience for our Cub Scouts, families, and volunteers.
Unfortunately, based on the projected weather conditions, we do not believe we can deliver the experience everyone deserves while
prioritizing the safety and well-being of our participants.

We understand that many families and units have been looking forward to this weekend, and we sincerely regret the disappointment
and inconvenience this decision may cause. This decision was not made lightly, but the safety of our Scouts, families, volunteers,
and staff must come first.

What happens next? Contact Natasha Leahey, 865-566-0645, [email protected] or
Anthony Ingram, 865-455-5268, [email protected] to transfer your registration to
Fall Family Camp Weekend #2, October 23-25, or to request a refund.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support of Scouting.
We appreciate your flexibility and look forward to welcoming you to Camp Buck Toms
for a future camping experience!
