Zoom Play of Jonah Coming

Our next informal, unrehearsed West Hills Dramatic Reading, will be Jonah, The Not For Prophet, October 12, 7:30pm, Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2272006912.

Jonah is the funniest book in the Bible. Here is a human being who is ordered by God to go on a mission – and who runs away. When he succeeds (almost accidentally) in the mission God gave him, Jonah demands that God carry out the divine threat to destroy the evil city of Nineveh even though the citizens there have repented and become good people. God is delighted that the people of Nineveh have changed their ways and tries to explain and demonstrate to Jonah why the city does not deserve destruction. Jonah never does understand the biblical story that bears his name. And yet the Jews who compiled the Bible decided that the Jonah story should be included. Jonah is certainly the strangest of prophets. Jonah is the prophet who is most like us.

Performing a play informally--no rehearsals--via Zoom is a great way for friends and neighbors in West Hills to get together safely. No acting experience is needed. We are delighted to now be officially part of Healthy West Hills.

Please join our West Hill Thespians. This will be our 8th play. It's a thrill to be part of a drama with no lines to memorize and with encouragement from everyone. If you would rather watch than read a role, that's fine too. Actors love an audience.

Contact Peggy Littmann at 865-776-1013 or e-mail if you are interested or have questions, or would like a script.

On the Line: The Creation of A Chorus Line

Our next informal, unrehearsed dramatic reading, September 14, 7:30pm, Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2272006912. Our play is based on the book On the Line: The Creation of A Chorus Line, by Robert Viagas, Thommie Walsh, and Baayork Lee, with the entire original cast.

Until 1975, dancers in Broadway musicals were nameless bodies who backed up the leading actors. For Broadway dancers, jobs were scarce, the work was dangerous, the pay was miserable, and their careers were short. They were taken for granted. That changed in 1975 when A Chorus Line opened. The musical paid tribute to the world-class athletes and artists who add energy and beauty to a musical.

A Chorus Line is composed of true stories that dancers told about their lives at two special meetings as they explored how they might work together to create more jobs--and respect--for Broadway dancers. When you see a production of A Chorus Line, mostly you are hearing the true stories told by those original dancers.

A Chorus Line ran for 15 years on Broadway, the longest-running play of its time. It won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and 9 Tony Awards.

BIKE RIDE IN TOWNSEND! This Saturday, August 21, we are planning to ride our bikes in Townsend, TN. There is a nice bike trail along the road toward the Smoky Mountains. You can bring your bike, bike helmet and water bottle and meet us at 7127 East Lamar Alexander Parkway parking area at a wine store. There is a shopping area close by. We are meeting there at 2:30 pm that day. We will ride for about 6-7 miles on that trail and then return by the same route.

There are some scenic spots along the way, where we can see people riding river tubes. There is also a swinging bridge to WALK over - not bike.

Hope you will consider joining us for this. We have not done this trail with our group but several individuals we know have. This is a very safe, family-friendly route so bring the kids! If you will please let us know you are coming, we will wait for you. RSVP, please! We will be watching the weather also to see if it will be safe to ride that day. Just email Anne Crais at [email protected].

7th Wesley Neighbors Zoom Play - Join us July 13!

We will be performing our 7th play on Tuesday, July 13, 7:30pm, again via Zoom, https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2272006912
We will read Little Lessons for Lina, a play by Mark Littmann. It's the true story of Caroline Herschel (“Lina”:1750-1848), the first woman to be a professional astronomer. She had only an elementary-school education with no math; was freed from virtual slavery to her mother and oldest brother by another brother, William; enjoyed a brief career as an acclaimed concert singer; and then, when her brother William discovered the planet Uranus in 1781, reluctantly followed him into a new career and became a famed astronomer. This play about the amazing Caroline Herschel is historically and scientifically accurate.

NEXT NEIGHBORHOOD ZOOM PLAY: June 8, 7:30!

Dear West Hills Residents and Friends,

We will be performing our 6th play on Tuesday, June 8, 7:30pm, again via Zoom. We will read a dramatization of Love, Life, and Elephants – An African Love Story, adapted from a memoir by Daphne Sheldrick.

In this indelible and deeply heartfelt memoir, Daphne tells of her remarkable career as a conservationist and introduces us to a whole host of orphans—including Bushy, a liquid-eyed antelope, and the majestic elephant Eleanor. From her tireless campaign to preserve Kenya's wildlife to the astonishing creatures she befriended along the way, Love, Life, and Elephants is alive with compassion and humor.

Performing a play informally--no rehearsals--via Zoom is a great way for friends and neighbors in West Hills to get together safely. No acting experience is needed. We are delighted to now be officially part of Healthy West Hills.

Thank you again for participating in our first month of activities for Healthy West Hills. I think we are off and running with this program and I am so pleased that so many neighbors have responded and participated with us. Please continue to come to events as you are able and let me know if we need to be aware of a problem as we move forward with this program under the auspices of the city of Knoxville and the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment.

Pickle Ball continues this week meeting on Thursday, May 20 at 9 am at the West Hills Park pickleball courts. Bring a bottle of water, a pickleball racquet and ball, if you have them. Fay Adams and Becky Herndon are the leaders of this event.

The outdoor Bike Ride is scheduled for Saturday, May 22. Kathy Scruggs and Donnie Ernst are considering the Alcoa Greenway - about 9 miles. Meeting place is 400 Louisville Road, Alcoa, TN 37701. Meet at 2 pm there with your bike, helmet and water bottle, please!

Please be aware of a change for the Book Club - just for May, 2021. Susan Seaman has a conflict and needs to change the date to Monday, May 24 at 4 pm at the Gazebo at West Hills Park. The book discussion will focus on The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson.

End of School Movie Night is still set for Friday, May 28 at 7 pm at 6829 Sheffield Drive - at the corner of Sheffield and Hastings Lane. There is a large white garage door where the movie will be shown. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on while viewing. Trader Joe's is donating healthy snacks for us to have while we have a musical performance. Several of our neighbors have musical skills and will entertain us while we eat the snacks. The movie - Air Bud, Walt Disney Production, rated PG - 98 minutes long will be shown about 8 pm. Please join us!

Don't forget to track your mileage and/or minutes of exercise for May. Please submit that as soon as you can after May 31. I want to report that we had 46 neighbors participating in April and logged 3596.36 miles of physical activity and 7305 minutes of exercise. WOW!! What a great start! Email Anne Crais ([email protected]) if you’d like a wellness tracking page for your miles/activities, or keep a tally on your phone, etc. and send Anne your total miles for the month that way.

Because of upcoming vacations and complications with the schedule, some dates in June may be "off" the regular schedule but come if you can whenever you can.

Take care and stay healthy, please!
