We vote. Every day. For the kind of food we eat, the way we talk to each other, the things we purchase. All of these individual decisions create the world we live in. Think about that. And then think about Harry Burn. On August 18, 1920, Harry T. Burn, a legislator in the Tennessee General Assembly, cast a vote that changed the entire country. Even in the face of fierce opposition, he changed his position and decided to support a woman’s right to vote. This single vote ratified the 19th Amendment.
To honor this, we invite you to participate in a one hundred-day challenge: for 100 days, consider all the things you vote for. Beginning on May 11, 2020, we’ll count down 100 days to the anniversary of Tennessee’s role in ratifying the 19th Amendment. Each day, think about your choices and your actions. Journal them, share them, tell someone, whatever you’re comfortable with.
On this end, we’ll be asking women around the state the same question, as well as, the significance of voting at the polls on election day. Interviews will be documented in video and available our website. Visit Every Woman Vote and, please, share the stories freely and broadly.
