Competition was just as fierce 80 years ago as it is today. But after leaving the showroom, the coat and tie came off, pajamas went on, and the camaraderie and cajoling shifts to a comfortable level with the help of light libations.
This incredible photo from our Shufflebotham Collection tells the story well.

Thomas Shufflebotham’s DutchEng Rabbitry was so named because he was enamored with both English spots and Dutch. This early 1930s photo from our newly acquired Shufflebotham Collection showcases some of his earliest prize winners. Our thanks to his granddaughters for thinking of our museum as a safekeeper of this history.

Thomas Shufflebotham sought out after World War II to bring in new exclusive English bloodlines for his beloved Dutch. From this foundational import in 1946, blossomed the basis for all of his black and blue breeding. He also imported a separate line for his tortoise shell. Today, we can thank Tom for his foresghted breeding plan and bloodlines that no doubt shaped the direction of Dutch today.

This year our committee will be breaking ground on an authentic historic reproduction of pioneer, John Fehr’s “Ideal Rabbitry”. A complete semi enclosed 18 hole rabbitry. It is based on a set of nearly 100 year-old plans recently donated to the museum by the Indianapolis State Rabbit Breeders Association.
