Hello Klamath Basin. Your YouthBuilders have been busy. I had to take a couple weeks off for health reasons but am back for now. In my absence we have had multiple GED test successes. We have also had our second student pass both the GED portion and the entire YouthBuild part. Congratulations to Brynner as you go on to the next chapter in your adventure. He completed all his OSHA 10, his NCCER core, his First Aid and CPR, plus all the hands on training. You were a real Joy to teach and work with.

We have other students whose self confidence continues to build after completing one or two of the required four GED tests. Way to go!

We are always accepting donations of new or re-purposed lumber and building materials. Currently we are in specific need of cabinets to store food items in. They can be free standing or for wall hanging.

Hello Klamath Basin! Here at Klamath YouthBuild we are practicing our concrete forms before the real deal. We hope to be doing the first sections of “dirt work” at our job site this week.

Our next co-hort is planned to start in June. If you, or someone you know, is between the ages of 16-24, needs a GED or is actively working with the Klamath Learning Center or Falcon Heights give us a call. We would love to talk about our program, how you can earn money while gaining trades experience and completing your GED or Diploma.

The time is here and now! Your Klamath YouthBuilders have started with the first affordable housing construction. We are just starting to break ground on our first duplex. Dear residents of the Klamath Basin,
It has been our honor and privilege to work with our students in helping them obtain their GED’s (general equivalency diploma) and obtain skills in our pre-apprenticeship construction trade course. We are building affordable housing for the community and at the same time helping our youth and young adults build themselves up also. We work with a challenging subsection of our community, those who have disengaged (dropped out) of school. We have some great success stories, but also those of adversity. The stereotypical view of a high school dropout is not what we see every day by our students. Most, if not all of our students are dealing with life issues outside of their control. They are smart, funny, kind hearted, stubborn and wilful. We are always looking for that next mentor, the retiree with time on their hands, that young person wanting to help others, the person who finds fulfillment in helping young people find their life direction. If that sounds like you, please talk to us. We are looking for volunteers, part and full time employment.

Hello Klamath Basin from your YouthBuilders. We have another great announcement to make. One of our Senior students completed and passed his final GED test. It was the Math test, the test that most of our students dread. He never lost sight of his final goal and kept trying. We are all proud of Gabe for reaching the top of this mountain. As he continues with our pre-apprenticeship program in construction he will find many other mountains to climb. Great job Gabe.

Comments of our students ranged from “oh my gosh, I have never seen so much food at once”, to “I didn’t know people cared this much about us”. That’s the difference a little bit of food security can make. Thank you so much to the Klamath-Lake Food Bank. It is so much easier to teach students when they are not hungry. The added benefit of being able to send food home when we know they need it, that’s priceless. A heartfelt Thank you from Klamath YouthBuild to the Klamath-Lake County Food Bank.

Hello Kalamth Basin from your YouthBuilders. While we all dig out from this intense winter storm we can’t help but be very proud of our students. They have had no school all week as we must follow County and City schools inclement weather decisions. Yet during this time many of them have banded together and have been shoveling snow in and around town for very little financial reward. As they are doing this on their own we can’t list their contact information here. Yet I just wanted to let everyone know, the “traditional” hard working kid is still around. We always hear about the teenagers who are apathetic, uninspired and frankly kind of lazy. Yet there are many who have the work ethic, backbone, and personal drive to work that us older people fondly remember. Good job guys. Stay safe and we will hopefully be back at it next week.
