Hello everyone!

We are approaching that time of year when people begin to spend more time outside. As the weather starts to get warmer, people attend barbecues, go camping, boating, motorcycle riding, and all the other things that take us outdoors to enjoy the warmer temperatures. Along with celebrating the change in the weather, people often consume alcohol while participating in their favorite activities. Remember, first and foremost, if you are under the age of 21, consumption of alcohol is illegal. If you are of legal age to consume alcohol, choose a person beforehand, that will stay sober, and be the designated driver to ensure everyone makes it home safely. Please remember, never allow someone who has been drinking to get behind the wheel, and never ride with someone who is impaired. Call a friend, family member or taxi. It is just not worth risking your life or someone elses. Stay safe, stay alive.

Once again, today was another powerful Klamath Operation Prom Night program. This program is a HUGE undertaking and there are SO many wonderful people involved that make it a success and make it happen. Thank you again to all of the local EMS, fire and law enforcement agencies; you men and women rock. Thank you to the Sky Lakes Medical Center staff for your outstanding ER scene. Thank you to Air Link, ODOT, our guest speakers and EVERYONE behind the scenes. We have individuals that play music, prepare cars so they are clean and safe, map out the scene, place vehicles, load and unload various items, find dresses/tuxes, get flowers, obtain donations, attend planning meetings, obtain counselors, contact school staff, make sure that every individual is in place at the right time during the program, apply moulage, obtain various vehicles used during the program, and many others that spend countless hours to ensure that every detail is taken care of. Thank you to Henley High school, our host for this year's program. Thank you to ALL of our actors; today was very cold, and those individuals were rock stars. Klamath OPN purchases bracelets that have our message "don't drink and drive" "don't text and drive" imprinted on them, and these are distributed to all of the local schools to be given to students when they purchase their prom tickets. They are asked to wear these as a ticket into their proms, and as a powerful reminder. Remember, prom is just around the corner for many of our schools. Parents please keep the line of communication open with your teens. We want every teen to return home safe, each and every day.

Hello Everyone! Once again, it is getting closer to prom season. However, our message that we deliver should always be practiced by everyone. We focus on the youth of our community, but impaired driving does not effect just the young, and it is not just the young that can be guilty of driving impaired. Here are a few things to think about:

Impaired Driving - Every day 28 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 53 minutes. (CDC)

Distracted Driving - In 2014 3,179 people were killed, and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. (CTIA)

Ten percent of all drivers 15 to 19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. (NHTSA)

Some of you may wonder what distracted driving involves. So here is a list:

TEXTING
Using a cell phone or smart phone
Eating and drinking
Talking to passengers
Grooming
Reading (including maps)
Using a navigation system
Watching a video
Adjusting a radio, CD player or MP3 player

How many times have one of you done any of those things??? It only takes a split second of taking your eyes off the road to cause a crash.

Please, talk to your children, spouses, parents, friends, etc., about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving. Remember to keep the lines of communication open with your kids about drinking and driving, or riding in a car with someone who has been drinking. We want everyone to have a safe, happy prom season, and we want everyone to go home that night safe and sound.
