Our Animal Care Manager, Amanda, tried an experiment on Friday. She just popped her smartphone in the enclosure with our fledgling Barn Owl to get some video while she went about her business in the quarantine building. He can't decide whether to toe dust or eat (yes, that's a plate full of diced mice). This little guy was injured likely when hay was being moved (see June 3 post). When admitted he could not stand and appeared to have a spinal cord injury. Look at him today! He still isn't weighting his left leg fully, but he is standing now!

Thank you to Nan and the great folks at Keno Tractor for hosting the 6th Annual Keno Community Car Show to benefit Badger Run! We had beautiful weather for Saturday's event and our educational animal ambassadors made quite the splash. Dudley, our Great Horned owl, even ended up getting some impromptu glamor shots taken among the poppies!

While most species of birds can move their upper mandible to some degree, certain species have more prominent craniofacial "hinges" than others. Check out this video!

Remember our little Red-tailed hawk patient (see June 10 post) that fell from a nest and tangled with a dog? He's standing now but was holding the left foot in a clenched "fist". On Thursday we put a "ball splint" on that foot to keep it open while he heals.

Patient #91 for the year was admitted yesterday. This small, first-year Red-tailed hawk was found downed on Mazama H.S. grounds here in Klamath Falls. Concerned staff contacted us and stayed with the little guy until our volunteer arrived. This time of year, a first-year bird on the ground usually just means a fledgling still learning the ropes. But, after seeing the pictures we were texted and the described behavior we thought this little one needed to be checked out. This very small, male (only 610 g) is showing signs of head trauma most likely from being hit by a car while feeding on roadkill (he had a full crop). The hawk had a greenish yellow discoloration and bad smell in his mouth which concerned our volunteer doing the rescue. But put together with the head trauma symptoms and full crop, it looks like he was hit while eating roadkill and regurgitated some of his meal's "guts". Anti-inflammatory pain meds are on board, and we'll see how things play out over the next few days.

Just a little squirrel discovering a big new world. Last month someone anonymously dropped off a orphaned baby California ground squirrel at our facility. The baby was healthy, but just needed more time to grow up. Unfortunately, the finder also left no information as to where the little guy came from. While we always try to release wildlife back to home territory, it was not an option here. We received permission from our local ODFW office to release the little guy to a suitable location nearby.

Don't blink or you'll miss the racer pop out of the pillowcase! Our little cat attacked racer has been released back to the wild where he should be! Western Yellow-bellied Racers are nonvenomous and incredibly fast. We find them regularly zipping around Badger Run. Unfortunately, our Golden Eagle, Ki'inew, is very fond of catching them when they decide to venture into his enclosure.
