This article is over a year old, and the location of meetings have since changed to Mondays and Wednesdays at the Klamath County Library, but there is chess again in Klamath Falls! The organizer is still Sherry Perry, and contact info given in the article remains accurate, so if you're interested please reach out to her!

One Klamath Falls woman wants to make sure everyone has the chance to try their hand at chess. Or, if they're old pros, have the chance to keep their chess

Since there's been a few new likes on this page recently, it seems like a good time to update everyone about chess opportunities in Klamath Falls.

The OIT Chess Club (which is open to everyone in the community, not at all limited only to OIT students) meets every Sunday from noon until 4 pm in the Student Union at OIT. If you're interested in Klamath Falls chess, start there!

I just became aware of a new (or at least new to me) Southern Oregon chess club - this one in Grants Pass. I don't know too much about their schedules, or what type of events they have, but they do have a page. If you're interested, go check it out!

(Just search for "Grants Pass Chess" and you should find it easily)

Last call for the Newport June Open! The tournament is this weekend, so this is admittedly very short notice, but it's a great event if you can make it!

Major upsides:
-Newport is a great vacation town, and the relaxed schedule of two games a day allows for time to enjoy some of the sights. (This is also a great selling point if you need to justify the trip to a significant other who is worried about what they'll do while you're playing chess.)
-Splitting the field into four sections limits the risk of mismatches; you'll likely get four competitive games.
-There's currently 34 people registered, with the hope of picking up another half dozen or more through this late final registration push.
-On a personal level, it was playing this event last year that rekindled my love of live chess and inspired me to start this club! I'd love to see it get as much support as possible.

If you're interested, please first review the tournament rules here:http://nwchess.com/calendar/Newport_June_Open_2014_Rules.pdf and then email or call the tournament director (his email address is [email protected], or you can send me a private message if you want his phone number). Officially there is no on-site registration, and it's too late to mail anything in, but he's willing to bend those rules if you can convince him you're serious and won't no-show, in order to expand the field.

The OIT Chess Club is hosting a free tournament at 5pm, May 9th (a week from Friday). To my understanding, all OIT students plus any local scholastic players (elementary, middle, or high school) are welcome, and possibly others at the organizer's discretion. I am NOT the organizer, I am just spreading the word. The last update I received was that there were 21 players signed up, and that the field is capped at 32, so if you're interested don't delay; sign up now.

To sign up you MUST do the following:

1) Email the organizer, Stu Taylor (OIT Chess Club President) at [email protected] and express your interest (and verify your eligibility).
2) Attend the OIT Chess Club meeting this coming Sunday (May 4th) - the meeting runs from noon until 4pm. My understanding is that to avoid no-shows at the event, any player who fails to attend this meeting will be scratched from the tourney field.
3) Show up Friday the 9th and enjoy chess, pizza, and a shot at cash prizes (for the top three players)!

Important update: Social Chess will NOT HAPPEN tomorrow. When scheduling we did not properly account for the fact that it is Spring Break and our venue is a school. I apologize for the late notice of this cancellation, and sincerely hope that anyone who had planned on attending gets the message in time.

Again: Social Chess is CANCELLED TOMORROW. The next meeting will be in two weeks, Sunday April 6th, as previously scheduled.

Tournament starts in just under two and a half hours. I'll be at OIT in a little under an hour, and registration is still open until 9:45, either at OIT in person, or by email ([email protected]) or phone (541-232-6011). You *can* take up to one half-point bye as long as you notify me BEFORE THE FIRST ROUND STARTS AT 10:00 AM, so if you want to play but aren't free until 11 or noon, you can call your registration in with a request for a first round bye.

Good luck to all our players today!

I just got word that *at least* three players from Redding will be coming up for our tournament this Saturday, so the field is now a minimum of nine players (at least five of whom are rated over 1900 - egads!)

Still hoping for more, double digits is always a nice milestone. And since pre-registration isn't required, I feel confident that we'll get there.

Congratulations to our member Stu Taylor on a nice undefeated performance at the Portland Spring Open (including draws with two experts) - bringing his USCF rating up to 1880. This means that the Klamath Falls Chess Club membership roster now includes three of the top fifty players in Oregon!

Throw in some very strong players in the Medford/Ashland area, and Southern Oregon is better represented within our state's chess scene than one might think. Watch out Portland, we're coming for you!

Our upcoming March 22nd tournament now has six players who have stated an intent to play - including an FM, two experts, and a Class A player!

Pre-registration is not required, but the heads up is appreciated as it makes the organizational effort easier. If you're planning to attend, please email [email protected] to let me know. I'd love to see some more strong players come and really make the battle for top that much tighter. And as the lowest rated player in the field at this time, I'd also like to see some more Class B/C/D players sign up ;)
