Thank you to all of our members who help make this organization so wonderful by showing Unwavering Support for Uncommon Heroes through Hands That Serve, Hearts That Care.

A coffee recipe for a Civil War military hospital from the “The Hospital Steward’s Manual,” by Joseph Janvier Woodward, published in 1862:

“No.1. Coffee for ten men.

"Put 9 pints of water into a canteen, saucepan (or other vessel) on the fire; when boiling, add 7 1/2 oz. of coffee; mix them well together with a spoon or piece of wood; leave on the fire a few minutes longer, or until just beginning to boil.

"Take it off, and pour in 1 pint of cold water; let the whole remain ten minutes, or a little longer; the dregs will fall to the bottom, and the coffee will be clear. Pour it from one vessel into another, leaving the dregs at the bottom; add 2 teaspoonfuls of sugar to the pint. If milk is to be had, make 2 pints less of coffee, and add that much milk; boiled milk is preferable.

"REMARKS. - This receipt, properly carried out, would give 10 pints of coffee, or 1 pint per man.”

On this day, we honor the service of the Navajo Code Talkers, who served during battles in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

The Navajo Code, which substituted or used words in their language for English words, was used to send messages on the battlefield between units and to headquarters. The code was never broken by the Japanese. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan declared Aug. 14 to be National Navajo Code Talkers Day.

DID YOU KNOW…
August 14 is National Navajo Code Talkers Day!

In 1982, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the day would henceforth be set aside for a celebration of the Navajo Code Talkers, U.S. Marines who used their native language to develop an unbreakable code during World War II.

As of the start of 2022, there are only three Navajo Code Talkers still living, but their stories live on as we pass them down, which you can do through our Youth Activities initiative, Patriotism Through Literacy. Two nonfiction books on our suggested book list are about these heroic soldiers: Code Talker Stories by Laura Tohe and Chester Nez: A Codetalker’s Story by Joseph Bruchac.

See more about Patriotism Through Literacy on our website: https://vfwauxiliary.org/what-we-do/youth-activities/

Peggy Harris and her husband Lieutenant Billie D. Harris had only been married for about six weeks before he was called away to the front lines during WWII. Unfortunately, his return home to her back in America was not to be. But after she started looking into official reports of his M.I.A. status, the "facts" weren't adding up. So she started digging, and it took almost 70 years to get the answer.
