Community Forum for Spruce Creek Watershed Management Plan Update
Residents’ Input Sought to Improve Water Quality

The Town of Kittery is inviting residents to a community forum focused on updating the Spruce Creek Watershed-Based Management Plan (WBMP). This event is designed to gather crucial feedback from the local community on action items aimed at improving water quality in Spruce Creek, with a particular focus on addressing the issue of nitrogen pollution and its contribution to harmful macroalgae blooms.

Spruce Creek is a vital resource for Kittery, but ongoing water quality issues including high bacteria levels and macroalgae blooms linked to nitrogen pollution threaten its health. In response, Kittery, with assistance from FB Environmental (FBE), is updating the Spruce Creek WBMP to address sources of nitrogen pollution through strategies such as new town ordinances and regulations, stormwater BMPs, vegetative buffer improvements, septic system inspections, sewer system maintenance, and community outreach. The forum will offer residents an opportunity to provide feedback and help shape the action plan to restore Spruce Creek.

How you can help:

Help identify key areas of concern regarding nitrogen pollution and macroalgae blooms.
Provide feedback on proposed solutions and strategies to restore water quality.
Contribute to the development of long-term action items that will be implemented to protect and preserve Spruce Creek.
Anyone who recreates, lives, works, or otherwise interacts with the Spruce Creek watershed is encouraged to attend.

Hwy 236/Dennett Road Hydrologic Watershed Study Public Information Session - Tonight, Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at 6:00pm

The Highway 236/Dennett Road Hydrologic Watershed Study project team has completed field activities associated with the study. Join the Town of Kittery and project team for a public information session tonight, Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at 6:00 PM in Council Chambers, located at 200 Rogers Road, Kittery, ME. The event will be broadcast on Channel 22, Facebook and live broadcast from the Town’s website.

The public information session is an exciting opportunity for the public to hear from the project team about the study results which focused on portions of the Piscataqua River, Spruce Creek, Chickering Creek and Spinney Creek. Community members will learn about existing conditions, the potential impacts of previous and potential development and hear recommendations for potential future actions by the Town.

Community members who are unable to attend the Public Information Session are encouraged to share comments and questions in advance that may be incorporated into the meeting discussion. Comments and questions should be sent to Public Works Inspector, Jessa Kellog at [email protected] by noon on the day of the meeting (August 9, 2023).

Join Save Kittery Waters on Monday, July 31st at the KCC’s Start Theatre, 7 p.m. for the launch of the new CreekSmart campaign.
The event will feature an informative discussion with Melissa Paly, the Conservation Law Foundation's Great Bay–Piscataqua Waterkeeper. Melissa works tirelessly to advocate, inform, and inspire people to protect and restore the rivers, bays, and coast that make the Seacoast such a spectacular place to live, work, and play. Town Council President Judy Spiller will introduce her and the campaign's other partners will be announced. The presentation will be followed by refreshments, discussion, and the opportunity to meet other people wanting to help the watershed!

Needed: Rain Event Volunteers!

Looking for an interesting and valuable rainy day volunteer project? In support of the Town of Kittery's Coastal Community Grant Nitrogen Loading in Spruce Creek project, we're helping to recruit volunteers to collect water samples during 4 wet weather events from June-November. During this time, the town will be concurrently sampling 9 tributaries to the creek during the rise to peak of rain events. No technical expertise is required, the work just involves taking staff gage readings and collecting grab samples at fixed intervals and pouring them into a mixing bucket (and hunkering down in the rain for 2-3 hours😅☔). Instructions will be provided to all volunteers before each rain event.

Since very specific weather conditions are targeted for this sampling, notice can only be provided a few days in advance. As a result, the town hopes to build a large list of volunteers to pick from, even though only 4-5 volunteers are needed for each event. This data will be critical in addressing the nitrogen sources fueling the Ulva blooms in the creek. If you're willing to join the list of volunteers, please message Save Kittery Waters.
